    iOS 17 Now Available

For those with an Apple device. The much talked about iOS 17 is being rolled out today to the general public.

I’ve always waited a few months to update so that any gremlins could be worked out, is that still a thing or do people recommend doing it asap?

I’m the same. Have always waited for xx.1 before updating.

Often saves a load of hassle and annoyance.

My only other thing is how the new software tends to impact the battery life.

Just installed it and the only difference I can see is a blue underline on some words when I type. Quite hard to see with the phone on dark mode.

Got my wife to call me to see the live voicemail thing and it didn’t work so might not be enabled for the UK yet.

Full feature list here but nothing to get excited over: https://9to5mac.com/2023/09/18/ios-17-now-available/

The option to use a Custom ringtone for emails, text and message alerts seems to be missing

I haven’t watched the video but deleting history now looks and operates like Chrome where you can select and delete specific history easier.

Looks a little cleaner somehow to me, but very minimal differences. No doubt there will be buried functionality that I never use though!

Watch iOS 10 on the other hand looks very exciting as a cyclist. Still waiting for that to download.

It’s basically 400 additional functions 99% of users won’t bother using.

There is now recent timer options added to the timer. Similar to Apple Watch.

I tried StandBy last night and am impressed. I have an iPhone 13 Pro without Always On, but tapping the screen once to see the display is much better than seeing the lock screen.

Worth it just to be able to say 'Siri' instead of 'Hey Siri'. Also works on HomePod, though I found you have to enable it in the HomePod settings within the Home app first.

I wasted some time setting up a nice looking contact card this morning, I wonder if I'll ever use it in real life. The animation when it share is fun though, a bit sci-fi.

A few little tweaks on the phone and the watch but so far so good.

  26. #26
I like the changes on the iPhone and iPad. I really dislike the changes to the Apple Watch. All the button actions have been changed for no good reason. There is no way to quickly change between watch faces. I used the sideways swipe all the time to do this. I don’t like that the recent apps has been hidden behind a double click of the crown.

Now for them to fix the custom tones issue, currently you can’t select a custom ringtone to use as a notification tone, whereas on Ios16 you could, if you have such enabled already they still work, but don’t go in and test it, you can guess how I know!

    17.0.1 is now released.

No surprise really my iPhone 11 was a little glitchy (certain apps) although my iPhone 12 was fine.

I’ve only had a few little issues but still trying to see if my battery performance has been affected. I’m not sure if it’s my imagination but my allle watch seems a little thirstier after the update.

On a 14 pro and still seeing loads of stutter and lag. Was really hoping that would be ironed out.

Here's hoping the update fixes an issue I'm seeing (iPhone 12 Pro) in that the phone is permanently in Sleep/Focus mode with the icon constantly displayed. No way I've so far found to switch it off.

For anyone else experiencing this issue, the 17.0.1 update does cure it!

Anyone else having issues downloading WatchOS 10?

Although my ‘phone is connected to super fast wifi (and the watch is on its charger), the download keeps pausing and saying that it will resume when I am connected to a wifi network. 🤷*♂️

Having been on the developer beta most of the summer it’s nice to get back on the regular release path with 17.0.1.

Not sure if it was update related - but dictation stopped working on my iPhone 13 recently.

After a bit of Google-Fu - a "Reset Network Settings" seemed to get it working again.

... but I had to re-register on WiFi

The new default notification sound is cheesing me off. Too quiet and you can’t change it back.

I was hoping the iOS 17 sounds changes meant we could choose different sounds for different things.

It bugs me that lots of apps all have to use the same sounds that cannot be changed.

I have lots of different tones - also can set within WhatsApp etc.

I’ve just changed the notification tone and it stays to what I set. Try a hard reset (left top button, bottom left button, right button hold until blank).

You mean people don’t permanently keep phones on silent? Cannot think the last time I had it ring!

Updated, but can’t see any difference, so will have to read what has changed! Annoyingly with the watch os10 I have lost favourites in the dock vs recently used & the stacked widgets don’t do things like Deezer annoyingly.

Not sure I’m a fan of losing the upward swipe or having to long press to change watch faces. Am sure I will get used to it.

Has much changed? I can’t noticed a lot of difference since downloading, but as a bit of a Luddite I probably only use 10% of the functionality of the phone.
