Hi all,
I’ve had this for years, no idea if it’s real or repro. Military is not really my thing, but it must have been in with a lot of other stuff from a boot sale some years ago. I wouldn’t have got it any other way.
It’s marked Assmann as the maker.
I can’t find another exactly the same. What does it affix to, and how, based on the back?
I’ve removed the offending insignia from the front pic.
Thanks
Foggy

Not that yours is a copy mind!
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Thanks both.

The oak leaves were an add on to the iron cross.
If you had already been awarded the medal, the next upgrade was oak leaves - so I guess the badge might be designed to be clipped onto the ribbon.
The golden horseshoe book about the U-boat Commander has a description of his Iron Cross medal and Oak leaves.

The oak leaves badge for the Iron Cross award is smaller.
Edti - I missed the link to the close combat award link before I wrote this..
