    ~1000 pound/euro watch challenge

A question for the group - you've got ~1000 to spend on a watch (new or used). What are you buying, and where are you getting it from?

(it struck me today that 1000 gbp/eur would get you something like a used Omega 2254.50 Seamaster 10 years ago, but general 'watch inflation' has been really dramatic in the meantime)

I quite like the look of some of the new Ollech Wajs watches that are just under 1k. A big price increase from what they used to be but by the look of them appear better made.

There are quite a few of the Titoni line up that are under a grand too and being an owner of one of their watches, they are of excellent quality.

Another option would be Raketa who have some nice/unusual watches around 1k

And yet ask the question "whats a good watch to invest in"(as earlier in the week).
And be shot down in flames for the use of the word investment!.

Clearly a lot were good buys.......yes not bought as an investment we all know.

New - probably a Hamilton. Used, quite a wide choice but maybe an Eterna, Maurice Lacroix or something from DJR.

Yeah 'invesment' is definitely the wrong word, but I think (as in the example of the Omega SMP above) 'inflation hedge' might actually have some mileage.

Maybe look at the vintage omegas or potentially a Doxa

It'd be a Sinn 104 for me too.
I picked one up last month via SC and its a really fantastic watch with IMO great bang for the buck.

Since I now prefer no-date watches and am impressed with high accuracy quartz movements, one or more of:

    • Bulova 96A225 Lunar Pilot
    • Newmark 6BB chronograph
    • Precista PRS-56 Mission Timer
    • A-13A Pilot Watch
    • Longines Conquest VHP (OK, it has a date but it uses a perpetual calendar...no adjustment needed) or the GMT version if that complication would be useful

Where from? The SC is where I bought two of the above and the Newmark I bought from the maker. The other two are on my must resist list.

Nomos club or Seiko Prospex SPB143.
    Both well under 1k used.

Certina, Hamilton, Longines when on sale, Tag - again when on sale or at the various outlet stores.....

Funnily Nomos Club was one of the watches I came up with. Also something second-hand from Formex maybe.

As a single watch for that money (well, in both cases slightly more, but near enough), I would be buying either the Siduna chrono or the Hanhart 417 ES, both on SC right now.
Both decent, well made chronos with good usable WR and bezels.
Both strong candidates for a single do-it-all watch.
Both remakes of older ideas, one a little older than the other, but benefitting from strong, traditional watch aesthetic appeal.
    One manual, one auto.
Take your pick, both are, imho, excellent buys.

New, I would take a Smiths Traveller and the new Newmark 71 in DLC, both can be had with change in the budget.

As a current owner of all 4 watches I have mentioned, I know very well I could live with all of them long term.

Would be a fairly tough choice but options would probably come down to

    SPB143
    Christopher Ward Sealander 36mm
Longines Spirit (would need to be second hand to get it in budget)

At that money I would have a CWC RN300 Quartz, without question

I'll never be able to afford an Urwerk, so I'd settle for a Phantasos Triclops -

Timefactors Sewills Ferreira would be my choice ,which is something unique and different in my opinion.

For under £1000, I recon you could do a lot worse than one of these.
Come to think of it, on the used market you could probably have one black and one white for under £1K.

If you wanted a large watch for under 1k you could get a 53mm Agat Zlatoust (Genuine divers watch too if that matters to you)

    Nomos I reckon.

    Stowa are another option.

One of my favorite watches has an MSRP of $895 - the 38mm Murph. That price leaves you some money to replace the less than ideal factory strap.

I was going to suggest a 70s chronograph like the Tissot seastar navigator but looking at chrono24 the asking for these seems to have risen

Same for me - but I'd like the 1983 remake please - I had a handful of the originals on my charge in 1985 when I was Navigator of a Royal Navy Hong Kong Patrol Boat. The lume - and the lumed bezel - were spectacular.

A nice Certina DS (lots to choose from), and save some money.

Or a whole host of used Longines
It's just a matter of time...
