A few of you might have noticed my absence from TZ over the past couple of weeks, here's why:
Just returned from a delightful 10 days in Benalmadina, first overseas trip for myself and Mrs W since Oct 2019 pre-Covid. Highlight of the holiday was finding Darcies Bar, a bar with a dance floor that's 100% soul music, mostly Motown and Northern Soul. Full of the more mature clientele having fun, reliving their youth and generally 'keeping the faith'. My musical taste is wide and varied but I`m committed Northern Soul fan so it's fair to say I had a good time.
Mrs W and myself are now immortalised on the bar's Facebook page, Friday June 2nd was Northern soul night and the footage from that evening features is both in all our glory, we feature briefly on Wednesday 7th too. I recommend this place to anyone who likes soul music or wishes to sample the delights of Northern Soul; how do you define the genre?.......you just know it when you hear it.

Prior to Covid we generally had a couple of overseas hols each year, but since 2019 a combination of Covid restrictions plus the house move project (aka moneypit) took our attention away, we had a few short breaks in the UK but had no urge to go overseas till the house was sorted and Covid restrictions had gone. This year felt like the right time and that proved to be the case, like getting back on the proverbial horse. Even managed a couple of morning runs (rapid jogs) down the seafront. Lots of walking, eating and drinking in moderation (most days), generally chilling in the sun plus a few lively nights out. Malaga is well worth a visit, we spent a day there and planned an evening trip but didn`t get around to it. Also planned to visit Clarence Jazz Club in Torremolinos but never got there......maybe next time!
Might do a more culturally stimulating holiday next, but 10 days of sun and fun on Costa Del Sol has definitely scratched the holiday itch for now. I don`t enjoy travelling, I`ll do a 4.5 hr flight but no further, Canary Isles about my limit thesedays.
Back to reality, garden needs work plus a few more DIY jobs whilst the weather's good. MG need some exercise too, gym needs visiting, the running comeback needs more effort........might even find time to fix the odd watch or two!

You might remember the Compass Club in Torquay, circa 1975, that's in your neck of the woods, had a couple of good Northern Soul nights there as a fresh-faced 17 year old. No ID in those days, if anyone asked you simply lied about your age. Torquay was brilliant for nightlife in the mid-late 70s. Hideaway Club, Mr Matts, are the others I remember, but Compass Club was the Northern Soul venue that sticks in my mind.Originally Posted by ralphy

Wife & I also NS fans,I did the Wigan casino too,a life time ago it seems....
Go to a few meets still and meet with old friends.
Went to one a few years back at the piece hall Halifax,weather like today and so absolutely fantastic.
Mad northern soul fan here too. Unfortunately I was born just too late to enjoy the full fat 80s revival. Fortunately there were plenty of club nights catering for the scene in the 90s so I became hooked.

I think the edges are blurred between the original 'scene' and the revival! After the mid-70s I only got back into the music in the mid-90s but I remember hearing about events from early 80s. A couple of lads from work were into the original late 60s scene, they could tell a few tales!
Hopefully some younger blood will get interested and events will continue, the oldies like myself can`t keep going forever.

I really like Souther Spain, my sister and family live in Casares, i used to have a place in Manilva but sold it a few years ago, thinking of buying another as we spend a lot of time there
Sounds like a good holiday - we're driving to Malaga and beyond later in the year in a motorhome. We were going there last year but only got as far as Barcelona and had to turn around as we had to return for family issues.
More importantly .................. What watch were you wearing?!!

Keep the faith Paul. NS all nighters still happen at The 100 Club. Not been to one for a while but they still happen.
I guessed as much as you've mentioned it before! It's probably time to move it on (to me!) and treat yourself to something new!

Just love Northern Soul used to get to Wigan Casino but mainly The Torch in Hanley and The Twisted Wheel in Manc. Happy days without a care in the world, other than how we going to get back home.
