Recommend a watch for 911 owner.

One of my clients is a big 911 fan.

He has asked me about a watch that links to his interest in the 911.

He’s a big guy so a big watch is no problem, he currently wears a white dial Longines dress watch. He definitely doesn’t want a Rolex.

Is the obvious answer the black Orphina chrono?

Not sure he will be bothered with the hassle of vintage so needs to be something readily available.

    What are the forum suggestions?

Don’t Tag Heuer have a few Carrera Editions out currently specifically linked to Porsche

IWC spring to mind as Porsche did a lot of work with them over the years. They are also in broadly the same place in the equivalent hierarchy.

If he has money and likes things a bit different Singer make watches. Very ugly but a link to Porsche and not a Rolex.

He's looking for a German made watch, originally engineered for Hitler with the movement in the wrong place.

Or one of these from Porsche Design which look pretty nice:

Porsche design is the obvious choice but a Gulf Monaco would be pretty nice too.

I looked at that but I don’t see the chronograph as currently available?

This looks like the obvious choice but even though he could afford it I don’t think he’d want to have a watch of that value.

Has he seen the opening scenes of the Steve McQueen film Le Mans?

The Monaco re-issue might be a good shout.

As mentioned above, TAG have some Porsche editions and if he must link a watch to his car, this sounds like a good bet. Also available on bracelet:

The vintage Orfina's are a good option. Alternatively you can build your own Porsche design watch here - https://timepiecesconfigurator.porsc...ature=Preis-GB

There was a Ltd Ed steel and white face with blue highlights version of this -

He should have a think about the Rolex aversion because the clear and obvious choice is a Daytona. Apart from the obvious racing links, there’s the fact that both represent the very best in engineering in their category and that both target the aspirational working class with that sweet spot of entry level luxury. They were both launched in 1963 too and share a 60th birthday this year.

Sinn 956 gets my vote. Not strictly a 911 watch but very discreet with its motorsport cues.

If £5k is over budget, how exactly will that work?

If he's happy to only spend a couple of hundred (and who shouldn't be), may I suggest one of Roue's offerings?

Recommend a watch for 911 owner.

Vintage Heuer or the Porsche Design ones… making me miss my Carrera S

As a glorified beetle owner, i took the subtle approach...

Can't think of anything worse than a watch that lets people know i'm an even bigger knob than they first thought.

Love that film especially with a 911 s driving through early 70’s French roads. He wore his Sub during those scenes.

Ooohhh, is that a chip in your Beetle's paintwork? I really hope you have the purple velvet blazer and shoes to match! [I'll keep my eyes out for a Moser-colourway Austin Powers sports car around Harvey Nicks / Intercontinental ... ]

Isn’t that the USP of Rolex?

Edit. That’s an attempt at humour btw …

Maybe this is the obvious answer...the original racing watch before it got hijacked by NASA.

On topic, the Monaco is actually a nice pairing.

Turns out they come in purple too, hmmmm.

Probably a chip, could be dirt, or it could be another insect orgy, they love the color.

Of course i have the shoes, i’ve got low standards to maintain while jump starting yet another dead battery by the side of the road LOL

    Great colour match!

Wonder if they do a dial in GT Silver? 🙌🏻

My previous post was obviously a joke, but if it's taken your fancy, I believe it's £23 you'll never get back!

Seriously though, since I guess I am a 911 man myself I've thought about this subject before. I really love the much unloved Porsche Design Monoblock Actuator, but I could never bring myself to buy one new. Now that they are discontinued I have mild regret, especially as they were 40% off this past January, but even at that price I walked away. I wouldn't really call it a 911 watch though as the styling is more brutalist.

However, I am not a big fan of car themed watches just as I wouldn't want a car to be watch themed. My favourite watch for driving is my 44mm Panerai as it's very legible at a glance, and with a strap a lot less loose than anything on a bracelet and just looking at it makes me happy.

But if I'm being honest, I think an analogue plastic G-shock is probably the best driver's watch.

On the affordable front I'd recommend an Autodromo Prototipo chronograph.

Another affordable suggestion- Hanhart 417ES reissue, as worn by Steve McQueen in real life, rather than Le Mans 1971.

Quite bit cheaper than a 5512 as well.

Mine and someone else's 997 GTS.

The 911 is to sports cars what the Rolex Submariner is to watches.

Like it or not, there is only one choice for him.
