The Annual Friday Watch Awards Ceremony 2023

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me welcome you all to this years TZ-UKFWT awards, the annual celebration of Friday watch wearing.

There has been a slight delay due to unforeseen circumstances. It appears that the invitations, which were sent out before Christmas, were held up in the Royal Mail strike action and were not delivered in time. Or at all. So here we are, virtually rather than really. Despite the hasty rearrangements we have managed to hold on to most of the entertainment so, without further ado lets make a start.

You will be pleased to discover that this year's SC sponsored swag bags have a reassuring heft to them despite there only being three items in there. Firstly there is a novelty TZ mug (which seemed to be all the rage last year) each of which has a mugshot of every member here tonight. To add to the bonhomie of this evening whoever is on your mug will be the first on your card for the dancing later, lets hope that you and your partner haven't crossed swords this year (well actually that is almost guaranteed, the selection committee (lead by our host) has carefully chosen each pairing to give an opportunity for you to kiss and make up). The second item is a stainless steel Rolex. There are so many hanging around SC at the moment we have decided to give them away. Beware any of you who have ideas of selling them on for a quick profit, you are being watched and, if caught, will be sent to the forum pillory for everyone else's entertainment. The final object is the obligatory envelope for donations to the Fundraiser. Our burly security team, fresh from installing meters for British Gas, will be walking around to collect your donations and they have full license to use their skills to extract as much value for the Fundraiser as they think is necessary. So dig deep, or you might find yourself being dangled off the roof terrace until you do.

Our events team have been working their little socks off to bring us the very best in entertainment, but they just didn't quite make it. For our guest speaker we tried to book international man of the moment Volodymir Zelensky but he wouldn't accept the F-16 we offered him. We explained that we could only afford an Airfix model and suggested that, perhaps, one of his tech guys could turn it into a drone with which to scare the Russians. I even offered to relax the dress code for him but he still refused. After a little searching we found someone who would accept what we could scrape together in the form of weaponry (a few handmade knives, a soft air pistol and an under powered air rifle). Please give a traditional TZ welcome to this year's guest speaker, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin who has promised an entertaining talk entitled "Applying Cold War dogma to the modern geo-political landscape" or "My red button - will I or won't I?". Knowing how much he likes a song and a dance, if we are lucky, he might tickle the ivories and treat us to a rendition of "The Shield and the Sword", or, if we are really well behaved, "Blueberry Hill".

The musical interlude will be slightly different this year in that there won't be any music. Instead we have our very own squad of mixed martial artists, The Keyboard Warriors, who will be performing a selection of their awe inspiring moves accompanied only by the sound of furiously tapping keys. The display will start, as is traditional, with our budding Chuck Norrises going through their Kata, some from the comfort of their armchair, the more experienced from desk chairs and, for those few who have attained tenth dan, a kitchen stool. Once they have warmed up you will gasp in wonder as some of the finest physiques on the forum deftly pull off some astonishing keyboard gymnastics, such as flawlessly touch typing "eating communual pizzas in surburban piazzas has pizzaz". Their finale will be a breath taking demonstration of bravery as they say to each others faces what they have only ever previously written. We guarantee that this experience will linger long in your memories.

Right, to settle your racing hearts lets dig into last year's numbers. Last year reverted back to fifty two Fridays over which 7254 watches were worn. This is a huge drop of 711 watches from last year. This can't all be apportioned to there being one less Friday as the weekly average also dropped to 139.5, approximately eleven down from last year. The highest weekly total was recorded back on the 28th of January when 173 watches were counted, the lowest weekly total of 112 was recorded on the 18th of November which was one more than last years lowest (so not all bad news then).

Looking at the monthly figures April (a five week month) had the highest number of watches with 756 being worn, sixty four fewer then the previous highest month. This worked out at a weekly average of 151.2. The highest weekly average (156) was achieved in January (624 watches). Sadly 2022 saw a new record for the fewest watches worn in a month which was the 483 worn in November, a good thirty eight fewer then the previous record set in September 2021.

Our progress to the sunlit uplands of 400 brands in a year took a backwards step this year, falling as it did by eleven brands to 371. The positive to take from this is that, although there were nine percent fewer watches in 2022 we only had three percent fewer brands. Incredibly twenty two percent (eighty two) of the total for the year were new to the thread. Over the last three years a total of 588 different brands have been worn on the Friday thread. I did not think that so many brands could have existed over the last hundred or so years of wristwatch manufacturing. Two months in to 2023 and I don't think we are far off our six hundredth brand.

Now can all members to be upstanding for a few moments of solemnity while I read out the list of the Unworn. About Vintage, Accurist, Addiesdive, Aision, Alkin... Stuff this I am not reading out all 218 of them. Here is an abridged version. Cuervo Y Sobrinos, Durex, F. P. Journe, Ginault, Ikepod, Leonidas, Luch, Moscow Time (can't think why), Offshore Professional (hard to believe) and finally Zlatous.

Right, before we get to the awards part of tonight I would like to introduce this evening's glamourous assistants. We tried to book the shy but popular power couple Harry and Megan but they were indisposed being as they are on their worldwide Privacy Tour. Not having a spare to fall back on we decided to hold X Factor style open auditions. Anticipating large numbers of up and coming hopefuls desperate for their first big break we prepared for a throbbing queue of vast proportions. Imagine our surprise when we opened our doors to find Holly and Phil smiling politely. Before we could finish berating them for their lack of queuing etiquette they pointed out that they were the only ones in the queue. So please attempt a warm welcome to this evening's celebrity assistants, Holly and Phil.

Lets get underway with the most watches from one brand worn in a week - this year it goes to Rolex with thirty six, way back on April the First (I kid you not). Still one short of the all time high achieved by Seiko.

The most watches from one brand worn in a month - again it goes to Rolex with 114, also in April (this was the only time in 2022 that a brand exceeded 100 in a month).

The most watches worn through out the year - making it a clean sweep for the first time it is Rolex again with a total of 929 watches. In second place comes Seiko with 796. Omega trails in in third place with 646. Timefactors comes in fourth place with a respectable 417 ahead of Tudor with 348 (strangely that is the same number they had last year which is quite an achievement considering the overall drop in numbers).

This year's Night Owl/Early Bird award (which goes to the brand which started the most number of Friday threads) was a close run thing. Twenty two brands started the Friday thread in 2022. Yes Rolex win this one too with seven, only one ahead of Blancpain and two ahead of Brietling.

As previously mentioned we had eighty two newcomers to the Friday thread in 2022 ranging from the humble Merkur, to the "fashionable" Ellesse, through the unusual Maghnam to the high end Laurent Ferrier. In reverse order the top three newcomers were Airan with 6 and Clemence on 9 but this year's well deserved Newcomer of the Year were Credor with 12 appearances. This interesting top end Japanese brand is very much "under the radar" but can be found for little money (if you are willing to settle for vintage quartz instead of an Eichi II).

And now to the individual awards but before we get to the Bonkers Watch and WOTY I would like to introduce another award (well we are in an inflationary period after all). I have a soft spot for Seventies watches. Sometimes, perhaps unfairly, described as the decade which taste forgot the Seventies were an important time for watch making. In an horological pre-Cambrian explosion a vast array of case shapes, crystal forms, movements, colours and brands suddenly appeared. Due to the quality of manufacturing many of these watches are still around today. Even if some of them are of questionable taste they survive to remind us that sometimes taste doesn't matter and that it is alright to let go. This year's new award celebrates this wanton discarding of staid convention. The inaugural winner of the Unashamedly Outlandish Seventies Watch of the Year is Snowman's Valjoux 7734 powered MOD. With its asymmetrical case, brown fumee dial, soft cornered octagonal crystal and huge, chunky indices it has everything you would hope for from a watch of that era.

Next we have the Bonkers Watch award. This year there was quite a long shortlist. Snowman was there again, this time with his Xeric Halograph, there was also Tommyzzj's Maghnam Madar, uktotty's Ciga Design Blue Planet, Danstone's Franc Vila Universal Timezone and thebuffoon's Phantasos Triclops. Much as they tried none of them could quite reach the heady heights of bonkersness (or is it bonkerserity?) of Top Cat's Romaine Jerome Spacecraft Dark. Not one for shy, retiring watches Romaine Jerome partnered with Jean-March Wiederrecht of Agenhor (a sort of Skunkworks of the watch world) to develop a module for the humble ETA 2892, creating a timepiece that is not only a jump-hour but a retrograde one at that. Why is it bonkers? Well you could stop at the retrograde Jump-hour module but there is more. Not only does it look like something from which a Xenomorph could leap out of at any time, but to accurately tell the time you have to look at two different windows, the hours on the side and the minutes on the top. All round properly bonkers.

Finally we come to the Watch of the Year. For the last couple of years the decision has been reasonably easy to make. However 2022 has provided to be really, really difficult. Japanese watches came within a gnat's crochet of stealing the title (SeanST150's gorgeous Grand Seiko Suwa Lake, paw3001's elegant salmon dialled Kurono-Tokyo and Gavster's beautiful Kurono-Tokyo Grand Mori with urushi dial). The Toric Hemispheres by Parmigiani (Danstone again) manages to combine a multitude of functions in a very simple, elegant form. Paring it further back was tenpasten's Ochs und Junior Date and if, like me, you like your minimalism stripped back to its extreme there was zen123's Boldr Venture Singularity. Just reading through the list of above watches makes me want to change my mind but I must remain resolute otherwise it will be another week before I complete this. This years WOTY is unlike any of the others I have just mentioned. It doesn't have that classic Japanese precision of form. It isn't so minimalist that even the function begins to disappear before our very eyes. In fact, with a smattering of gold on the bezel and indices, it could almost be described as "blingy". As a product of the early nineties the style is very much "of its time" but that does not detract from its charm. At first glance it could pass as an everyday chronograph but that is before you clock the brightly coloured subdial at three o'clock. Why is this different to the other two? Well this is where the magic happens. Fittingly, as throughout 2022 I was looking into our preferred complications, this year's WOTY sports one of the few complications that might actually be useful in this day and age. Powered by a modified Lemania 5100 (a 5190 to be precise) the watch not only has a moonphase indicator but also a tide state indicator. Yes the 2022 WOTY is Mr Curta's Eberhard Mareoscope. Congratulations.

Now before I become too tired and emotional I will leave you with the numbers. There is still some number crunching to undertake so that the full picture of last year's watches can be revealed but let's start with these:

What an event, expertly hosted and not without surprises and drama.

I can only imagine the work and diligence behind its assured delivery.

Oh my goodness, this is so unexpected. I haven’t prepared an acceptance speech although I believe that I’m expected to use the platform to promote more female representation in the Friday Thread or something. I don’t know though, you have to be so careful these days. I recently said that I was avoiding trans fats and found myself being accused of all sorts of bigotries.

Huge gratitude to our host for another fabulous awards ceremony, even though my mug will only be putting in an appearance to unnerve my mother-in-law when she has outstayed her welcome. The supremely entertaining monthly roundups are always much appreciated.

I really am truly touched. Thank you.

Fabulously written as always, thanks Wimm.
Congrats Mr Curta, and might we ask for a photo of the winner here to save us the effort of a search?

    Superb, superb, superb.

Watch manufacturers would do well to read this thread to see how they're performing in market penetration amongst enthusiasts.

    Excellent stuff!

    A worthy winner!

A wonderful write up as ever Wimm - your summary is a must read every month and the awards are a highlight of the TZ-UK calendar.

And for my O&J to get a mention in the WOTY is just the cherry on top 🍒 ☺️

    Thanks for all the work.

I've told you before - it was a Spreewalder Gurke and I have no idea what it was doing there.

Thanks Wimm for an entertaining read and all of the hard work.

Right, to fully close out 2022 I will go through the stats in a little more detail with some brightly coloured charts and tables for you delectation.

Firstly, using a little VLOOKUP magic amongst other things, I have worked out how to give a little more detail on the changes in numbers and positions within the table. So the below snapshot is of the top 130 brands (the screen is only big enough for that many. If you wish information about a specific brand not listed let me know and I will dig it out. Or perhaps I will try and figure out how to share the whole table. There is plenty to see there but one surprise that stands out is that exactly the same number of Tudors were worn in 2022 as were worn in 2021. There are plenty of other little treats in there too.

    , on Flickr

On to the Bit on The Side. It was decided that the extra data to be recorded during 2022 were complications. To keep it simple and to avoid too much time being spent on recording every single complication I decided to record up to a maximum of two complications per watch. If a watch had more than two complications I would count the rarest first, otherwise some of the really interesting complications may not have been recorded. As a control I also counted the number of watches that had no complication other than to tell the time (even though that became a little complicated with one handers, two handers, three handers, sub-seconds etc). The first pie chart shows that we do like a date with over 50% of the complications recorded having some form of date complication. Conversely the next largest grouping is for no complications whatsoever, which I have classified as "Simple" with 20% of the count and then we have chronographs at 15% and, with 6.5% of the share travel time.

    , on Flickr

Before I finish I thought you might be interested in a closer at the two largest groups and see how they break down further. Firstly dates as we had eight different date complications.

    , on Flickr

And the "simple" watches of which we had six different variations.

    , on Flickr

That is enough from me, as you can see complications are complicated (and no this post was not an exercise in how many times could I include those words. Until the February write up....

I'm sorry I couldn't be there on the night, but obviously news travels slowly to the wilds of Hampshire.

It is with great humility and not a little surprise that I thank you for your award for the MOD (and a second nomination my Xeric).

If only I could tell the time on the damned things!

The MOD for anyone who is interested.

The Annual Friday Watch Awards Ceremony 2023

Even though I was a podium finish I have boycotted this years event due to Mr Curta cheating by having a more interesting and a better watch than I!

I mean a mechanical watch that tracks the tide…that’s bloody unfair.

He also pretends to be a throughly decent fella with all his charity raffles and Take Time adventures but underneath all this he continues to mock those who are afflicted with the inability to use postal services correctly! One little mistake whilst being terribly hungover after a GTG and the mocking never stops! Anyone would think I had had sexual relations with the British Post Office!

So Mr Curta, enjoy your win via cheating with that amazing watch but l hope you lose it when you next go surfing.

    NO, I AM NOT BITTER!
