No different really to the link we talked about earlier.

Basically "Tomato suppliers blame the poor weather conditions in Spain and Morocco for the ongoing issue."

Common Ian, you know exactly why he posted this link as it was a direct reference to your percentages ;)

From what I've seen, all over the internet, those percentages seem about right.

I do however believe the link he posted tells the true story, I agreed with a similar link posted earlier.

Of course 48% of people will probably disagree.

I can tell you that following an AFP report, many French and French-speaking Belgian newspapers are covering this shortage as a number of UK supermarkets have decided to restrict the number of loo rolls tomatoes, peppers, etc. a customer could purchase. Probably a good thing to avoid panic buying making the shortage worse.
The point being that there is no such shortage in either of those countries, who also import from Morocco and Spain to top-up local production.
It seems the heart of the matter is not so much the shortage itself in the UK, but the prices asked by (or to) the distributors which increases the shortage and its consequences.

Obviously the further the goods travel the less there will be, as the nearest buyers will be catered for first.

I cannot read any Norwegian, Swedish or Danish paper to see if they have the same issue. I believe we have at least a Finn member who could comment.
You are probably correct when you say it’s linked to logistics, at least in part; I am not sure it’s key though.

Asda and Morrisons ration fresh produce including tomatoes and peppers

    https://www.theguardian.com/business...ruit-shortages

My wife just went to three different local shops for a lettuce and got the last one in co-op. Quite annoying.

Start growing your own (all ours except the bananas and pears - though we are growing a couple of banana trees also)

I say - eat what grows locally in season - wherever you are. Since when were tomatoes in season in February in the UK?

You could grow lettuce on a window ledge?

The domain where your photos are hosted is fitting! That’s a great picture Martyn and how it should be done. We do grow our own bell peppers, chillies and tomatoes but not enough to sustain us. More like a rare treat.

I still have some of your honey and am having a teaspoon daily. Delicious stuff.

Haven't planted chillies this year, as my freezer is full of reapers and scorpions.

Killed last years harvest, put them outside in the heatwave thinking they would like it - they died within 2 hours.

Never managed to grow more than a coupe of tomatoes, and they never ripened - would love a greenhouse, but the wife says no.

There is now massive investment in vertical farming in the UK, if successful it should eliminate issues like these

Going to pay a bit more attention to it this year but I think the heatwave wrote ours off too.

Nice routine to get out in the AM and give them some water before the day heats up.

Ours grow in pots as the garden isn’t big enough to section off. One day!

Tesco in NW Leics is bursting with all manner of fruit and veg. Sympathies though to those who have been inconvenienced by the weather event.

You could be correct- history has shown that 48% to be clear sighted and accurate observers of events and their consequences.

I guess the other 52% must be seeing imaginary tomatoes and lettuces despite most of the major supermarkets now either restricting sales or admitting to having empty isles.
So clever my foot fell off.

Maybe some distribution managers are biased as to which parts of the country they supply.

Ta. I’ve personally shovelled in about four ton of (composted) manure so far, this year worms are appearing at last. But Yep - almond trees grow like weeds over here. We are taming ours as they need some attention!

We’ve been promised some bees from a local farmer this spring so should get some honey by the winter. Sadly I can’t get any to you chaps.

I had mine in the large self watering troughs in the garden room, greatly light, warm but not like a conservatory.

They are ugly buggers though. Think the water underneath evaporated in the heat & hot steamed the roots to some degree given the speed they died.

Made chilli jam with a previous year of frozen, lemon drops and some others. Washing the pan was somewhat like the clarkson episode. Was so bad.

Oh yes. In fact I had some imaginary tomatoes from Tescos for tea earlier, along with some nice imaginary lettuce, radishes and spring onions. Nice imaginary tomahawk steak from Costco's as well!

When I was a lad it was fairly common for seasonal fruit and veg to be in short supply because of weather problems.

We are going to have a shortage for a few weeks and it seems akin to an imminent nuclear attack.

Yeah, but Fifers aren't that big on Fruit or Veg, it wouldn't be good for their more stunted stature. [My wife is from Kirkcaldy, I visit regularly.]

Off to Tesco’s later, mustn’t forget our ration books. Hope they haven’t run out of powdered egg and spam!

Yesterday evening, Aldi (Hythe) Fruit and Veg section was half empty (as in: half the shelves were empty, not that each had half the usual amount) with no tomatoes, hardly any bananas, no peppers) and Tesco has joined Morison and Asda in restricting the quantity each shopper could buy.

Apparently Morocco have been restricting exports of tomatoes in an attempt to control prices.

Why would they do that you may ask?

    Well.......

And so the Moroccan government decides to act.......

    And then.......

    As well as.......

So probably not the weather then. More a case of exports being cut off to keep prices down in the home market, in a time of greater demand. Can't blame them for doing that.
