    RIP Pele

Obviously not unexpected news but very sad to lose an all time great nonetheless.

    RIP

Damn. It's weird, I know he was very ill and was 82, but Pele has always felt like a god, like he should be immortal.

    RIP Pele, The Greatest.

I can’t claim to be a football fan, but watching Pele play was just like magic. Every sport has a master, a greatest ever; Pele was just that.

Remember watching the 1970 World Cup, cried when we exited but watched in awe when Brazil destroyed Italy in the Final. Pele was incredible. RIP

Well before my time but as a football fanatic there can be no name who brought more joy globally than Pelé.
    So sad.

How very very sad. Always professional and never cheated like many of today across world football. What he thought of their antics we’ll never know but I’m sure he had a critical view of the cheats.

His ethic was simple: him against the opposition in the days of contact sport.

What a wonderful man, off and on the pitch.

He opened the doors for football in USA, the sleeping giant! A sad day for sport.

Not many in football or any other sport quite like him. A modest man.

RIP Pele. A true legend of the beautiful game.

Would have loved to have seen him play live. Only saw him on the tv in the 1970 World Cup. Great skill tempered with absolute humility

One thing crossed my mind though. Will his funeral be bigger that Senna's?

Brazil is is highly (politically) divided country at the moment. Pele's funeral can bring people together again. I would not be surprised when he, after his dead, unites the people of Brazil one last time. I hope so.

One of my enduring memories of Pele was when Banksy (the goalkeeper not the artist) saved his header in the 1970 World Cup group stages.

Brazil still beat us 1-0 and went on to beat Italy 4-1 in the final with Pele scoring first.

RIP Pele, the stats bear it out - you were the best there's ever been.

What a fantastic footballer and genuine nice guy he was.

I am old enough to have followed the World Cups in 1966 on TV (in black and white) and 1970.

I still remember how many defenders actively went out of their way to literally kick him out of the game as it seemed that was the only way to stop him. More often than not Pele would get up and shake them by the hand.

    Imagine that happening today.

My favourite footballer of all time, I too remember the 1970 world cup, what a player, every time he had the ball at his feet was just magic.
RIP Pele, Edison Arantes do Nascimento.

Pele would have fitted right in here in the forum when reading the first paragraph.

And about the funeral: it’s gonna be huuuge!

It brings back many fond memories of my early school years. Please, in mitigation, my big thumbs on this tiny phone screen can throw up some unintentional mis-spellings.
I should, perhaps, spend more time proof reading the dribble that I have written.
    Now, again, Edson, Edson, Edson.

That was a great game - and that save!! Gordon Banks was The Goalie.

I still recall Pele and Bobby Moore at the end hugging as though friends. Probably we’re!

Bobby Moore was before his time and one of the best, ever. Pele knew that and that he wouldn’t be kicked up and down the park by him. What a game! Class players.

Pele & Bobby Moore had the greatest respect for each other. They swapped shirts at the end of the game. Two players, Pele, a supreme football artist, matched against Bobby Moore, one of the few players on the planet that could stop him.
