Gives you hope, when all we can do is moan about politics in football.
Good on Japan and well done.

Germany's problem is that Costa Rica looked so inept that you can't imagine Japan not beating them so Germany will need to beat Spain but then even if Spain beat Japan in the last game you'd have Germany and Japan on 6 points each with Japan having the better head to head.

So Germany need to beat Spain (in itself improbable) AND hope Costa Rica get something from Japan (not gonna happen).

    Ergo, auf wiedersehen

Something about the Dutch goalie, Andries Noppert. First, his length: 2.03m. What's more interesting: last week's performance during the WC was his first performance with the national team. In fact, only played 40 games in his complete professional career!

Van Gaal (the manager) has been criticized for his choice of an unknown, inexperienced goalie. But Van Gaal has a history when it comes to goalies. In 2014, he successfully put Tim Krul (Newcastle) on the grass for the penalty shoot-out with Costa Rica. And this WC again, one goalie is only training to stop penalties.

On Monday, family of the players were allowed on the stands during practice and there was interaction between friends, family and the players. Not for Noppert: he simply cannot afford his family to come over from the Netherlands to Doha. In a team where overpaid players fail (Memphis Depay!) is also a player who's not rich enough to see his family. (I'm pretty sure the manager will not let this happen again...)

Kane really showed them. That must have hurt the Qataris like hell.

I can only hope that Rolex doesn't blacklist him for it. That would be a high price to pay.

I'd assume that Rolex lent it to him... I mean, no one would actually buy it, would they??

    Fully deserved Iran. Well done.

Iran v USA should be a cracker. Lots of political history to aid that one.

Iran played well and I'm trying to figure out if that's because Wales are appalling or if Iran were better than they were vs England because they got smashed 6-2 and have now smashed Wales 2-0. Assume a cricket score pasting will be handed to Wales by England (and England must go out of their way to humilate Wales and rub it in their faces, not rest players please as the matter of making right the Wales mockery of England's defeat to Iceland must happen)

Come January, he'll be in the English Premier League, could even be Manchester United. He'll be plenty rich then.

    You show them Harry haha

Wales were very poor but have been for quite some time. Dont think much top level quality is there anymore and the stars of the squad are old and past it. England will run riot against them

Prob makes more sense to rest players if they want to progress in the next stages (presuming qualified).

PS - which team are you supporting this WC :)

    Wales have done good.

When Kieffer Moore said he couldn't wait to knock out England ... he should have focused on Iran first.

    ...Knob'ead.

Exactly. Bale's the same with his anti-English remarks. They're both happy to earn a living here though. Sheep shaggers.

I massive cheer went up in our house when Iran scored and I hope we don't rest players on Tuesday and we absolutely batter them.

Bale and Ramsey have carried them for years but both have been absolutely dreadful at this tournament. Let's see how good they are when both of them are retired.

To be honest Wales were lucky to only lose by 2.....could have easily been 5. Iran were just a totally different team to the one England thrashed 6-2.

Cannot see how England won't put 4/5 past Wales next week but do think our game tonight against the USA will be a tough one.

  26. #276
Well I’m ashamed to admit, I’ll be watching the match tonight, my daughter and OH both want to watch it and I’ve been overruled, I am tempted to fire up a game of Football Manager but I’ll sit and suffer in silence

Anyone know what watch Roberto Carlos was wearing in the Brazil v Serbia game… didn’t get a chance to snap it. Looked superb! Black and white colourway!

    Hammer nail head....

England are through and good on them, go on boys.

Not a bad world cup to be honest to see some teams I'm not used to seeing perform superbly.

If only Canada had a bit more experience and finesse up front, plus Japan, I thought they were superb.

I don’t get all this anti Wales rhetoric; they are our closest neighbours along with Scotland (who are not there obviously) and I for one would have liked to see them progress through to the next round along with England.

Whist I was born and bred in England and no welsh in me, we see all still British at the end of the day.

The same would apply if Scotland or either of the Irish teams were there.

I’m not anti-Welsh - My parents live there, & ordinarily I’d like to see the home nations do well.

However, it’s the anti-English sentiment from Moore that irked me.

    So he can FRO.

I used to be like you about 20 years ago, then I started travelling for work and realised the Welsh, Irish and the Scots can’t stand us and take great delight in our losses, I do admire Scotland though for sticking to their principles and boycotting the World Cup, again.

Correct, FRO! Wales have always been an insignificance that we never bothered with until they celebrated when we lost to Iceland. They started it.

    Really ?
    Come on !
You’ve posted stuff yourself on previous England competitions that were as bad, and you’re a fan !
And to call Wales an insignificance is bloody insulting btw

Let it go boys, I’m Welsh through and through, but I would always want to see another home nation succeed where we had failed.

Come on England, USA taking it to you here.

    USA looked impressive tonight.

Did think for a moment we might have seen a rehash of the Yanks 1 Planks 0 headline.

USA vs Iran will be a good one

Southgate was a trifle embarrassed on the performance in his after match interview, and so he should be leaving Foden on the bench just shows how inept he is. Bloody crap England.
