The pop-up ad's drive you mad

I realise this site needs to bring in funds to keep going. But the ad's that keep popping up all over this site drive me nuts.

Do a search on the subject and see what people are using to prevent them.

I've noticed a new thing happening in the past few days: the page seems to download fully but then after a short while a new ad appears, the forum freaks out for a couple of seconds and reloads with the font different from normal. It's then impossible to click on any link. Anyone else seen this? Chrome on Android, no ad blocker in use. I should say, it doesn't happen every time, on maybe 10-20% of pages.

I've had that on the pad (not on the PC). The different font is weird. I just reload or open a new tab (can't remember which).

Recently I've also had an ad floating up and down on left margin... Where in the past they used to stay at the bottom.

It seems togo in fits and starts, some days seem worse than others. I get this problem on the ipad but not on my PC.

I question the value of this form of advertising , does anyone actually take notice of the damned things? I just find it irritating, I take no interest in what the ad is promoting and I suspect I’m not alone.

Advertising in general irritates me thesedays, when watching TV I often stop the programme for 15 minutes then watch it, thus giving the chance to fast forward the bloody adverts!

This, on my iPad. It'd driving me to distraction if I'm honest, and literally ruining the user experience.

For the record I can't find a mobile IOS ad blocker that works on Chrome, only Safari (eg Adblock, which I have).

I block 90% of advertisers that appear in my twitter feed.

For Apple users on a desktop, their Safari browser has an option to switch on an adblocker and it works a treat.
So much so, I've knobbed Chrome off altogether after ten years use.
I do still get ads if I'm browsing on my android phone, as said above, some days real heavy, some days not so.

Just installed the Apple adblocker after nearly having half of my screen blocked out with ads.

Desktop browsing has plenty of solutions, whatever platform you use. Mobile not so much, as Chrome for mobile can't deal with extensions (so Chrome mobile users are basically stuffed).

So, is there no suitable ad block for Safari on IOS/IPad? Or other browsers on IOS/IPad?

I use AdGuard on PC and iPad and it works fine. Also stops Youtube ads which is a big win

  18. #18
Using Safari on iOS I used AdGuard which then stopped working so moved to BlockBear which is working a treat.

    Cheers

This. Use an iMac and only see tiny ads at the bottom of the screen.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

The ads are completely transparent with only the X on show for me.

I have just switched on my MacBook Pro and not a single advert is appearing after I installed Apples adblocker yesterday.

The problem, of course, is that disabling ads deprives the forum of income but on the other hand the ads are so out of control it almost takes over the entire screen.

Nail on the head, the ads are so intrusive that they make some threads totally unreadable.

It has gone very OTT, even typing this I have a pop up and a ad at the bottom, sometimes you get Ads on the right hand side of posts. Its is very irritating and seems to be getting worse.

On my PC with edge browser I get zero ads, yet on my laptop with Chrome its just a constant barrage, ad after ad, its not pleasant here on my laptop that doesn't have edge by the way, its a Chromebook, but the ads do seem to have taken over the site just lately.

This site also drains the battery more than most. Data use must be higher too.

Updated iPad a few days ago.

Ad’s are back. Can’t remember what I used to block them.

I can no longer visit the site on Chrome on my iPad - there are no Chrome IOS ad blocker extensions available, and consequently the site is completely unusable. That means I have to use Safari just for TZ, which is a tad irritating.

I absolutely appreciate the need for ad revenue, but it strikes me that it's a bit uncontrolled at present. Fortunately I can block them on my MBP, which is just as well!

I browse exclusively on safari on my phone, the ads go through phases. At the moment the first post of each thread is unreadable as a floating ad sits at the top of the screen. This has happened before with videos which would disappear after a couple of refreshes.
I too appreciate the need for revenue, which is why I have never installed an ad-blocker (seems I might not be able to anyway). It’s a shame as this is by far my most visited site, it would be terrible if the ads progressed to similar to WUS or Omega Forums.

The Barclays pop ups are aggressive & three within four mins means Brave browser on Safari from now on using this site, needs sorting almost unusable on mobile.

  40. #40
I've noticed one of the ads freezes the site and changes the font of everything, I assume until it finishes loading/running.

As you say, its virtually unusable on mobile.
