I took a local garage to small claims. You have to follow citizens advice to the letter, offering a negotiated settlement etc. The letters have to be set out in a certain way and in the correct order. Eventually, you may be offered mediation. It usually ends up with offers and counter offers via the mediator (no direct contact). I settled on a figure that I was happy with as I didn't want to waste time in court (but you do have that option if you are 100% sure of a result) For the £50 fee, it was worth it for my claim. Check the citizens advice website for full details and sample letters of intent etc.
    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/la.../small-claims/
    Good luck.

Either I have missed the detail or you have omitted it......................

Where did you buy it from?

I became aware of a clear 2year warranty under UK consumer law when I was getting the runaround from Apple UK.

So - suggest you pursue that avenue in UK.

TBH, anger aside - it's not worth the effort for a few ££'s of laptop.

I find that a strange comment, not a huge amount of effort to get more than simply rolling over.

I did not say 'huge amount', and it is not about rolling over.

Advice: Before you go any further, buy and read the book below. It will be tremendously helpful. There is (ideally) a protocol to follow before initiating court action.

'Small Claims Procedure in the County Court: A Practical Guide', 7th edition
    https://www.wildy.com/isbn/978085490...e-county-court

The best place to buy the book is from the publisher at the link above, not Amazon.

    7th edition is the latest.

It's £700 (less use obtained from it before it broke). Well worth legal action, I'd say.

Afaict that's where you have to speak to people at HP. The locations don't have any relevance to legal action in the UK.

So £100 at best, given advances in models etc.

    To me, no.

Are you an HP shareholder? :-)

Advances in models that one did not buy and would not have access to without spending more money are not relevant to the issue at hand.

If the reasonable lifetime of a supposedly good quality laptop is, say, 7 years (as a comparison I still happily use a 10 year old laptop) then, given a £700 purchase price, it depreciates at £100 per year. Therefore if this one gave about 1.6 years' service then a claim might be for £540 (plus whatever additional unexpected costs were incurred as a result of the laptop going wrong so soon).

Note that this is just a suggestion. Claiming for the full purchase price could also be reasonable although the judge might well take usage into consideration in his or her judgment.

However, even if the claim was for 'only' £100 I'd still say it was worth it for me. Doing the right thing is priceless and £100 recovered for shoddy goods is still £100 that rightly belonged to you. I understand that YMMV on what is worth it or not.

    Good luck with it.

I'm not sure there is much different between any of them to be honest, so not buying HP is a moot point really

I disagree. I bought my daughters £500+ Lenovo laptops for Yr1 of Uni - both fell apart within 3 years (hinges a key problem). I've since bought them Apple Macs (based on my own experience - my daily is a 2015 MB Pro, still going strong, build and performance) - light and day between the two IMO. Yes, Apple cost me 50% more, but I expect to last at least twice (probably three times) as long.

Laptop screens have always been an issue, I remember one company saying it was because people opened them from one of corners and that twisted the hinge slightly tightening it up.

It's a valid point...i have had some really bad customer service issues since lockdown and the companies that have generally been best are the small ones.

Good luck to you. I took on a similar task seeking a small claim from SEAT when they would not honour their corrosion warranty. To me it seemed well worthb the effort

My limited experience with suing big corporations (easyJet and MBNA) is that they lose the paperwork and in a panic appoint lawyers on the last possible day and contact you or forget to respond to the Court. Reasonable chance you get a judgement in default. So worth a crack at it as you may well end up not arguing the consumer rights niceties. They just work on the basis that customers threaten but rarely act on threats to sue.

HP either seem bomb proof or break for fun, I'd have no qualms with a small claims.
My wife had a Lenovo that failed in the same kind of manner but I've got a ThinkPad and it is built more solidly but then cost more.

Seat were great with my grandad after he had a squeak they sent down technicians from head office and then took the car away for inspection before offering to buy it back off him for the full price he paid as they agreed it had a squeak they couldn't identify.

Well done for both getting this progressed and ignoring Chris who was so emphatic about it not being worth it.

LOL. How is it not worth it? The cost of a Special Delivery letter.

It will still be a mediocre (nearly 2 years old) HP laptop when it's fixed and tech moves on.

Plus, I have zero patience with stuff like this

Result for the OP is all that matters though

The main lesson here is that Laptops are too important to buy cheap stuff.

I am moving over to Apple and it is money well spent.

    This

I’m consistently impressed with Apple’s service even for out of warranty items without apple care.

Apple support request a call back and an actual human is ringing you back within minutes. When you are used to hanging on the phone at your expense, it is a breath of fresh air.
