    Retirement watch

    Hi All,

Looking for some inspiration for a retirement watch for my father.

    I’m thinking…

    - quartz so he doesn’t have to worry about it winding down
    - less of a pure dress watch so it’s more versatile
    - not delicate as (I hope) he’ll be on many adventures
    - decent waterproof rating, maybe screw down crown
    - budget up to £1000ish

Obvious options would be a used Aqua Terra but these appear to be well out of budget, Seiko presage but these are all automatic as far as I know, Hamilton Khaki Field but no screw down crown.

I’m sure there are many more options so any help would be much appreciated.

Happy for any of my points above to be questioned and overridden.

    Thanks

Without being able to point to a single model, my advice would be to go titanium. I find lighter titanium is more likely to appeal to the comfort of an older age group and actually get worn. I know citizen do cheap eco drive titanium but I'm sure there must be some c. £1k models about.

Tag Heuer Aquaracer Quartz is a good looking watch, well made from a well know Swiss brand. £1400 on the high street but from an airport, tag outlet store or with a discount you’re close to budget.

    How about a Casio Oceanus?

    https://www.seiyajapan.com/products/ocw-s100-1ajf

Slim, light, legible, tough titanium and solar so he wouldn't even need to worry about battery replacement.

Seems to fit the brief and would cost about £500 imported.

In the category of perfect one watch collection. Light, legible, low Maintenance, built to last. Great shout. Also available smaller?

I owned one last year. Seconds hands hit all the markers and much more accurate than 15 seconds a month. The ideal watch for someone who thinks it’s crazy to own more than one.

Longines Hydroconquest Quartz (do they do a Conquest in quartz?).

    Well respected brand, nice watch.

    Something from Certina?

This one would be my choice

If the water resistance of the above is too weak, there is always the standard model:

The Mido Ocean Star comes in titanium and I think it comes in within your budget.

P.S. Montredo doesn't include VAT in their prices, so you need to add VAT and shipping.

I’d also go for Longines, either the Conquest or Hydroconquest. Probably the best value for money Swiss brand around right now, easily on a par with some brands much higher up the food chain. And someone retiring now with even a passing interest in watches will remember the brand before they were repositioned by the Swatch group, when they were generally considered to be at least on par with Rolex.

If your dad is likely to travel a bit in retirement I would suggest a proper GMT and the Mido Ocean Star GMT is bang on budget. If I didn’t already have a Black Bay GMT I would be getting one of these.

    Some excellent suggestions
Mido Ocean Star is a great shout
If my kids happen to read this, I would like to let it be known that if they give me that Casio Oceanus or a Citizen Eco Drive as a retirement watch, I might disown them:-)

Pre owned Citizen Chronomaster or GS Quartz would be there or there abouts on that budget

    Retirement watch

For a quartz watch with good water resistance from a brand known to the wider public, costing around £1k, I don’t think you can do much better than the Longines Conquest or TAG aqua racer.

Personally, unless the gift recipient is into watches, I think GMT functionality or high accuracy quartz (VHP) is wasting budget on unnecessary spec.

The only thing that puts doubt in my mind is that the OP hinted that he was looking for something on the dressier side (not entirely dressy / Seiko presage). I guess a smaller conquest (eg 39mm) might look a bit more discreet

EDIT: 39mm only available in automatic

I have the MK2 without the PCL's and it really is a nice, well made diver for those of us with more modest wrists. There is also a black dial/bezel version.

Another shout for the Oceanus...I've had one for a while now and amazing quality and VFM...and being radio controlled in this country he shouldn't need to set the time or date...also has a larger than usual date window

The bracelet is great too. So comfortable! Only downside is that the clasp is stainless steel not titanium
