Petrol engine porn for the ears

I kind of feel like someone in 1921 posting a video of horses and complaining that these new fangled automobiles don't have that glorious clip clop sound. Anyway, get some while you still can. The Huayra noise is sublime ...

PS I nearly posted this in the electric car thread :D

    That was good.

Years ago my brother gave me a copy of Nick Mason's Into The Red which included a CD of the exhaust notes and engine sounds of a selection of his impressive collection. Even through the speakers of my cheap Alba stereo the BRM V16 at full tilt gave me goosebumps.

I was lucky enough to do four or five lamps at Monza. In a bayscreen VW camper. Flat out I was doing 65mph which doesn't sound that exciting. The corners were a bit hairy as the old thing did like to wallow a bit. Probably a good thing that they didn't let us on the parabolica.

Hope this link works, on a rolling road, not as exotic a car.

I'm rather partial to a nice engine note, was a key factor in ending up with the 6.2L E63 as I don't think you will be able to buy a high capacity naturally aspirated V8 which revs to 7000 rpm for much longer. Not my video but gives a reasonable idea of the sound...

    ...
I heard one at a Silverstone festival in 1999 (50th anniversary of BRM), both from the stands and in the pits when it started (those were the days!)

Best BRM V16 noise on YouTube is in this clip, listen with a good pair of headphones : https://youtu.be/Odv_MiNDfEY

I think some of the bike engines are fairly awesome too.

Check out this from the 1960s. A 250cc 6 cylinder engine, so each cylinder is 42cc! A double measure of alcohol is 50cc

    Awesome

I have stood at that spot, or very near to on race night. Around 2014-2016 when the Audi diesels where dominant.
I can confirm that the most impressive, bone shaking, fear inducing noise is 2 Corvettes passing at the same time, at 190mph.

And the fire/rescue marshalls sleep on the ground next to the track with ear plugs in!

you can reach over the armco in many places. Perhaps 1m from the cars doing 220mlh

Back in 2002 I think it was, me and a mate found our way somehow sneaking down the side of a cottage, through the garden to find a low armco in front of us, we were in search of the Mulsanne straight and watching that video brings back memories, it was night time, the noise was deafening and the car lights blinding, it was an incredible experience, we had to put toilet roll in our ears as it was that loud.

We did get escorted away from the armco in the end by some Gendarmes!

Yes I've done this a few times.
Walking across fields to get to the track at 1am, like moths to the flame.
Le Mans is a unique spectacle. Up-close elite motorsport.

We also blagged our way into the pits one year, and I'm talking into the pits close enough that you could jump into the car if the moment arose!

My overriding memory of Le Mans in the 90s was the R26B engined Mazda, which was a rather less glorious sound.
