Welcome Chris, interesting story that :-)

So, the 30 is your design or did I miss something (which is quite common)? ;-)

Hi Mike, Yes the PRS-30 is my design.

FWIW, I like the crown guards and the lugs - but I need a seconds hand.
I can understand you thinking this but let me say:

    1. Until China can produce the quality required, at a price which makes economic sense, then I'll stick with Germany.

    2. If I do ever go down this "slippery slope", then I'll tell you that I'm selling a Chinese watch and not have somebody in Basel breathe on it so I can call it "Swiss".

    3. I understand that in order to deal with the Chinese you have to travel to China or employ an agent to act on your behalf. I don't see me doing it myself and I'm too tight to pay anyone else to do it. Doing it myself would not be an efficient use of my time and employing an agent would surely wipe out any cost benefits.

    Just an update:
after looking about 200 times on the two mock-ups, I've decided that the CG's look extremely good. A nice counterpart to the lugs imho.

My only confusion is with the Escher-esque twisting of reality that allows the bottom lug to go in front of the Timefactors watermark!

42mm is fine for me. No problem with the Seagull movement since you're being upfront about it. If it makes it more reasonable price-wise and not an LE, that would make it better and more reasonable as a daily wear.

No to quartz , in my preference, as once the battery goes, so goes the watch into the blackhole of ". . . mean to get that battery changed some day."

I wasn't hopeful at all on Monday when I came up with the idea of a Roman based Italian PRS, however the project is only two days old and judging by the response I'm now optimistic. Either way, this forum provides some excellent and quick feedback on ideas which is great.

I'll continue to produce more designs with the aim of creating something exceptional someday.

I like it a lot, even though it's missing a second hand - there's something about a sweep hand.
Will the crown guard be machined around the crown, or just a straight cut? I very much prefer it to be machined around the crown iso the straight cut...it shows quality and just that little bit extra. Guess this is my other pet peeve with watches

I prefer sans serif type on the dial, it gives it a contemporary feel, the Precista script dates it.

I had seen that a couple of weeks ago. Superficially similar, but many differences (lugs, crown, dial et alia)
    .
Looking at the PRS30 pics initially, I couldn't decide whether it was a sandwich dial. I presume it isn't.

It would be a sandwich dial. I discussed the construction today and was offered "thickly applied luminous on a regular dial" but it's not the same, nowhere near the same. A sandwich dial does, however, increase the cost.

I'd prefer sandwich dial too, unlike the arabic numerals with holes in the 9 and 6 the romans don't need modifying when used as a cut out.

I might be too much of a Panerai fan to add anything worthwhile to this thread. The project is certainly interesting. The only thing that comes to mind is that at 42mm., it is unlikely to satisfy those like me--if that matters much. It isn't just that I normally like big watches, but that also with the prs-20 at 45mm., I just don't see too many wanting a smaller, yet similar (I know it will be different) watch.

Good point, especially since 42mm is definately NOT small. However, almost all smaller Panerai (again, too much influence perhaps) are not nearly as popular. The size of the watch (between 42mm and 45mm), compared to all other aspects; dial, hands, lugs, movement etc...are but one issue that may be minor to most. If the project goes through, I think a poll could be taken. Although, I've seen quite a few posts over the last few years here at Timefactors that suggest this crowd is not swayed as much by the Panerai wave of oversized watches. Yet the reality is that all manufacturers are making watches of bigger and biggers size.

Looks great, but my technical (de)formation makes me shiver when I see meters or feet in capital letters... :?

The watch looks really great, maybe I would prefer it without crownguards, would look less sporty and more consistent with roman numbers.
For the same reason I would prefer it without second hand.
I also agree that Precista on top would balance more the dial and fonts could be a tad bigger.

    Re: PRS-30

i'll weigh in...the earlier designs were better.

    - lose the crown guard...it's a silly affectation and detracts from the overall look for this particular style.
    - lose the prs-30 on the dial. Precista on the top half, some text on the bottom. the dial should not be sterile - we have the prs-20 for that.
    - really don't need a seconds hand. it looks odd putting a center seconds hand on a dial with no seconds markers.
    - keep the no screw-down crown
    - max case size no bigger than 42mm
    - i happen to like the sandwich dial

The centre seconds do not work. Either loose the seconds all together (I rather liked the two-handed version) or use a small subseconds dial, at the risk of cluttering up what is otherwise a very nice and clean dial.

yes, simple and balanced is the key (IMHO)

The numerals and dotd provide an elegant yet bold symmetry and the script on the dial complements that
Crown guards are a toolwatch/diverswatch thing, this beauty is neither.

If the script on the dial could be in the same colour as the lume then this version is close to perfection I think...

    Re: PRS-30

I actually think the "Precista", in it's original script style, does suit this dial - it adds a dash of the classic and Roman numerals never really work for me in a modern setting.

Lose the seconds hand (great point by Denizen regarding no seconds markers) - if anything, replace the VI marker with a seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock - that would look super-cool... Come on you Photoshop pros - at least let's see what that would look like. ;)

Final point (for now!) - hand wind watches with screw-down crowns do bug me a little if they're not an out-and-out diver - I like to wind my watch a couple of turns at a time, on the wrist throughout the day...just for the sheer hell of it!

    Cheers,

    Guy :)
