Rolex Submariner date is easily the most recognizable Rolex sports model.
Generally it might be the two-tone DJ though.

Any of the Rolex divers would be a quintessentially Rolex sports watch suppose.
I would say a James Bond Submariner being the most quintessential of all or would it be an Explorer maybe.

Not normally a fan of many Rolexes on leather as most seem to have been designed with the bracelet as an integral part, but it adds a whole new dimension to the Explorer that I just never would have expected.
Not quintessential though, even if someone’s favourite.

To most people all these sub / sea dweller variations watches look the same. Quintessentially Rolex and common as muck. It depresses me that I love my sub ND as much as I do. Wear it more than anything else and I suspect there are a good few people who do the same.

Another 114060 vote for me. It was my first Rolex, 6 or so years ago and since then I have bought several more. It’s the watch that made me develop a strong affinity for the brand. I sold mine to upgrade to a 116600 a few years later. The SD4000 is a truly amazing watch but the Sub and the Explorer were the first “Professional” models back in the early 1950s so it doesn’t get more quintessential than a no-date sub (any reference). The key thing that has changed since I bought mine, is that back then you’d walk into an AD and ask for a steel Submariner and they would ask you “date or no date”, “LN or LV”. You’d probably even pick one up in Duty Free on your way to your summer holiday. Now you have to mess about treating the AD like they are the customer and sit on a waiting list...or pay over the odds. Oh the frustration!

Unless you are a diver, in which case you’l probably see Rolex as an expensive toy, any Oyster Perpetual offers exactly the same basic advantages. You can swim , play normal sports and they won’t fall apart. The rest is nothing but harmless play acting. It’s marketing that sells these watches. Sport is where Rolex aims their adverts. Not at genuine watch enthusiasts.

There's really no such thing as a sports watch. You wear whatever you like that will take whatever conditions your sport entails and not be damaged. My Datejust was worn when cycling, running, fellwalking, swimming, rockclimbing etc for over 20yrs. I wore it 24/7 and that included my job as a firefighter, when we'd regularly have a sauna after a decent job to get the smell of smoke out of the pores.

I have a 16600 and a 114060 and both are great watches. The SubC ND is more practical as slimmer and better bracelet. But for me the 16600 wins as despite being a fairly modern watch, it was the last one actually used by Comex for serious underwater diving.

Only joking. Even though I have one, I would say Submariner Date 16610 or the five digit GMT.
The five digit watches have a reserved charm and character. The newer watches are bold and blingy in comparison, in my opinion. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Well it has a screw down crown and I play sports (drinking) with it on...
Thats what makes them quintessential.
We all seem to agree it's not the Milgauss at least. I'd go for 16600 or the polar Explorer II. I'm excluding the GMT (sitting in a cockpit is not sport) and Sub (SD is the master of the waves). All in my opinion of course.
It’s got to be the 16600 for me too. It’s a happy middle between old and new and still robust that I don’t have to worry about it.

To me, the quintessential Rolex sports watch had to be the one that’s most recognised by the general public.
On that basis, the only contender is the submariner.
However, the quintessential Rolex has to be the Datejust.
Edit : I’d probably also go one step further and suggest that the above mentioned van be narrowed down still further to the two tone models.

Could the one that is most recognised by the public be the Day Datejust? It seems to be the most frequently advertised by them in printed media?
Failing that, the 16610 Sub with cyclops is another ubiquitous Rolex, as is the James Bond 5512/5513. However, the last Rolex I would sell would be my 16600 - the most tool toolwatch thay Rolex have ever made imho.

I’d agree wholeheartedly, perhaps adding that the any date sub is likely to be the quintessential Rolex to the man-on-the-street. For many, a cyclops seems to remain an indication of “the real thing”.

Depends who you ask. For most average punters it would be tu Tone DateJust with fluted bezel.
For a master criminal, business/media type, politician is would be a Gold DayDate.
For a billionaire WIS it would be a Newman Daytona
For a typical WIS it would be a Pepsi GMT or a DRSD or a 5513 or a Hulk or whatever.
