I would only say it was as this species is native to the Eastern and Southern US and the song is based on the South.

    Its officially summer.
Two swallows on the river tonight. The gulls have moved for the May flies. Bats in the garden for the first evening. Still cool though.

    For alfat33:

This is a real owl (don't know what kind) sitting in a pile of leaves at my son's house about 1 mile away from me. He took the picture about a week ago and it is sitting in a pile of leaves that has been up against his house and fence in a small carport area since he bought the house last year. I have been on his butt for ever to clean up those damn leaves to no avail says he no time.

We do seem to have a lot of owls around here you can hear them at dusk but I've never seen one in the wild before. Thought you would like the picture a little rough and ready but cool just the same.

I know that these are already on "ze list" but have just watched a buzzard, a kite and a sparrowhawk (sounds like the start of a really bad joke) share a thermal and disappear way up high. Not much else to do but lie on your back and look up.

    No-one seen a feral pigeon?

  12. #112
Posted earlier that wasn’t even seeing seagulls but last few days have a lot and not just flying over, hanging around and
perched on roofs and chimney pots. Wonder if it’s because they aren’t getting the usual dropped chips and ice creams on the coast, we are about 10 miles from the nearest saltwater.

Don't forget - I will be paying the £14 that I cost you, pending any further sightings from my armchair facing the patio doors.
Might lighten your load a little bit.

I don't think that this really counts but whilst scanning our neighbours' windows for signs of intrigue, murder and Miss Torso I have discovered that I can also observe the inhabitants of a chicken run in an adjacent garden.

And because chickens are a bit boring here's a beautiful hummingbird as mentioned by Zoiksy, taken from the window of our last apartment.

That’s a beautiful picture, what a treat to be able to see them from your window.

Chicken also added (Kingstepper’s frozen one didn’t count ).

Haven't been able to add anything to the list from my garden but made a donation to the fundraiser so I can gratuitously post below photo of a Bea-Eater(wasn't taken in my garden)

A lovely picture, not seen one of those before.

    Thanks for the donation.

So not having seen any peregrine over the winter I was lucky enough to see both hen and tiercel this afternoon. Was afraid they had gone away or dead. They supposedly nest on the Croydon south transmitter 3/4 mile away but sit on the CP transmitter now and again to take the pigeons.
    Made my day.

We are so lucky to live a two minute walk down our quiet lane to one of Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, a 1000 acres.

Today was total magic to see a male marsh harrier courting two females at a close distance in the sky, it was spectacular.

We have a pair of Red Kites spending a lot of time in our garden, I'm hoping they will nest although they are leaving it a little late

Managed to take a snap with my phone yesterday

The Marsh Harrier sneaks in under the wire, and the count is now closed!

Thanks very much to everyone who posted. I hope you all had some fun; I’ve certainly learned more
about birds than I thought possible in a week.

Thanks also to those who offered to make donations for their contributions. I’m still going to donate the full £96 so together with your donations that’s a healthy amount for the Fundraiser.

Despite enjoying this thread enormously, I’m sure all of us are thinking about what is going on at the moment, so I’m going to donate the same amount to NHS Charities Together. So double well done
to everyone who contributed to the thread!

I’ll donate tomorrow so feel free to check I haven’t missed your entry on the list :).

    Happy birdwatching.

On yesterday’s ride I was lucky enough to ride with an owl of some description. Not sure if these are common or not?

As I was out early, and it was the middle of the countryside with very little traffic, it was extremely quiet and “he” rose from the roadside verge and then flew alongside me.

By the time I managed to locate my phone in my jersey he was heading off in to the field.
    A lovely experience.

I guess that is a Barn Owl. Must have been quite an experience seeing it flying up close. I didn’t realise they came out during the daytime.

    Made a thing.

Inspired by this thread, the stump of a tree I just cut down and because I was bored, so I decided to make a bird table, which then because a bird table and bird house.

I used ply for the carcass, covered in Amtico flooring vinyl (waterproof and UV proof), some left over curtain rail and fitting, a bit of hardwood trim and lashings of PVA glue/stainless screws.

The table top has is camber to help any water drain.

That's a nice looking thing. Wonder whether anything will nest in it though as might be disturbed by birds on the table?

We have a pair of Barnies nesting in a box very close to us.
I’ve seen them out at all times of the day.

Had whitethroat, lesser whitethroat, blackcap and swallow on recent walks.

Hoped for cuckoo, but none yet. No swift or martins yet either.

Out for a walk yesterday and saw a Woodcock and a Snipe. I have not seen either since I stopped shooting game many years ago.

The starlings have fledged, and judging by the racket in the garden, it's a bumper crop.

No sign of the blue tits visiting the nest box today, so I guess they've also left the nest.

Really excellent barn owl photos, those are fabulous to see.

Not much new around here - early arrivals nesting, and we now have cuckoo, tree pipit, flycatchers arriving. Have missed this migration season, but hopefully we’ll be out of lock-up by autumn migration....

Lots of larks out and about today.

Serious question. Is there a difference between Skylarks and normal larks.

Lark is the non-specific family term, like tit or gull. A skylark is a certain type of lark, as blue tits and great tits are certain types of tit.
