I found these old coins in a box in the cupboard, I’ve no idea where they come from can only think they came from my grandads.

    Shillings.....
    George vI
    Elizabeth II

    Other....
    Trupennybit
    Sixpence
    Two shillings
    One penny

    Evidently some are ....

.... Certainly, Alexander the Great decadrachms are !

In 2017 a group of fishermen found a hoard of precious coins on the sea bed off the coast of Gaza. They were decadrachms from the reign of Alexander the Great- and they were worth a fortune. 3 years on, they have disappeared. So what happened to them, and why are rare coins so hard to trace?

Apparently a well-used phrase by numismatists and auctioneers alike.

dizz some pre decimal are worth a bit due to silver content which varied during the years so I’d do a bit of research on yours .You never know.

Pre 1947 silver British coins are worth more than their face value for the silver content. Otherwise not much value generally.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Pre 1920 have more silver content than pre 47.

    Thanks all for replying
Quick search shows that as the oldest I have is 1947 then they are worth 0.005p each.
Oh well I’m going to keep them anyway.

Charity shops e.g. OXFAM sell old coins . Your coins' dates are not valuable collectables unless in e.g. uncirculated (UNC) condition … and none of them are UNC

Do they take old foreign coins Dunk?

I've got a lot of pre Euro European coinage still.
    Cheers,

Might not be worth a fortune but bearing in mind that 925 silver is around 30p per gram these days even if the coins are only 50% silver ie a pre 47 post 1920 shilling weighs about 5.6 grams so 50% should still equate to near on 90p per shilling.

What’s the melting point of silver? Might be fun to try to make a bar out of old coins somehow.
    Cheers..

Fine silver is around 960C, alloys are lower.
Silver solders melt between about 500C and 800C

Having seen what the wife produces in the kitchen, I assume mine may be.
