I have a selection of pairs of 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, and 22mm springbars which have become mixed up.
I’ve tried measuring with a ruler to work out which are 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, and 22mm but this doesn’t seem very reliable. When not compressed they are all longer than their size.
Am I missing something or is the only real way to be sure to try each pair on a watch with known lug width?

They compress to under their designed length so they can be removed etc.
Best way would be to try them on a watch and then once you determine one of them, make piles in order of those smaller and bigger - you won't have any 21mm bars so you can be sure the next smallest are 20mm and so on.
I was in the exact same position last night. They all look the same!!

Get a pair of calipers / vernier OP, and i wouldn't spend loads as even the cheapo one's are pretty accurate on the whole. I've got a pair of these and they're great:

Won't help much with the springbar thing though as that is a nightmare to be fair, and as someone mentioned it's the compressed length to be mindful of (i know i've had problems with Omega SB's and i've been given different info on compressed lengths being different for OEM bracelets and straps, but not sure if there's any truth in it).
Shouldn't this thread be titled Spring bar lengths?
