They're bloody huge when you stand next to them!

Anyway, managed to get out for a while yesterday, which is a somewhat rare event given the weather, work demands and feeling rubbish.

Love how the bike's looking and handling.

Love this photo, look at the old boy ( red jumper) with two pints. He’s sipping his beer but watching to see a “real” bike get kicked over. We have all done it, not necessarily with two pints in our hands :)

I have had problems with pinlock, but that was only until I read the instruction and discovered that the mounting points are eccentrics and need to be adjusted to ensure a close fit to the visor.

Since then, 100% problem free and have been used in atrocious weather.

I think the problem occurred on the third helmet I had with pinlock, as before that the insert has fitted snuggly enough not to need adjustment (close enough that it didn't matter that of not read the instructions).

If you have the correct Arai - then these visors, previously only available to race teams, are very good.

The Comet arrived back today, it's the first time these two have been in the same garage together since I've owned them.

The term "stunning" tends to be used gratuitously these days (James_ take note), but I have to say that it's entirely appropriate here. What a couple of beauties, Duncan.

    KTM must be getting desperate

£3000 discount on super Duke 1290R but only if you finance it. Imagine if you bought one recently

KTM are notorious for that - The end of the season approaches and they announce a big bonus for the dealers if they can shift x amount of bikes, so the dealers do the sums and work out they can lose £3k profit on an individual sale and if targets are met then they can get that back and then some with the bonus.

Around February they always offer a "VAT-FREE SALE" which clearly is anything but VAT-free ... I don't know anyone who's bought a new KTM enduro bike other than in the annual reduction period. Certainly meant that I could put a virtually-new (well, 2.2 hours) KTM500 6-Days on the road this February for under £8k, when the list price was £10700.

    Cool Projects in garages

Went to a local bike meet last night and got talking to a chap that lives half a mile from me..

He got talking about some of his projects and said he was going to order an M18 tap to repair a thread. I told him not to bother as I’d got one and he could use it.

So I went down to his house and got to see some of the projects. Basically he’s into drag racing and top speed runs. He has a turbo charged ZZR1400 turbo that’s hopefully going to break the 200mph barrier. Then theirs a collection of turbo and nitrous hyabusa’s in various states of repair, a few old triumphs, and my favourite a 1976 Z900 owned from new with over 125000 miles on the clock.

    An interesting chap.

I remember about 6/7 years ago when Ktm were moving from the 990 to the 1090 then 1190. At Christmas the knocked out 1090’s at £10500 from memory. The previous list was £16k. All the bikes had 2 or three miles on them.

At the time there were lads on the GS forum considering sueing KTM Austria for the depreciation they had experienced!

Im planning on changing my 390 Duke in Feb March for a Triumph Speed 400. I know there is a new Duke 390 out ( launched yesterday). I hope ktm dont go daft on discounts in the Spring :(

I'm not sure the discount depends on financing the purchase...but even if it did it's still a great deal if you take out £100 finance and pay it back after the deal is completed.

I've had a Gen2 1290 SDR and have tried the Gen3 but only recently test rode the evo version - seriously tempted, particularly with the discount and 4 years warranty.
Btw I never needed to use the warranty on my previous bike so don't believe the nonsense that get posted about KTM reliability - if you go on a GS forum it's often only those with something negative to say that bother to post

My own experience with KTM is that they're really robust - even the crappy switchgear on my bike is 100% reliable - and although I have friends I ride with who've killed a variety of Beta/Honda/Yamaha, we don't know anyone who's had a properly unreliable KTM. There are some weak points (batteries go flat easily, fuel pumps don't last forever) but these easily addressable. I know a guy with 580 hours on his EXCF350 and, other than a huge number of oil changes, it's had just about nothing done and has never failed. My bike's only on 100 hours but likewise has been faultless. Anything that gets taken properly off-road has a horrible life, and there's a very good reason that so many enduro and green-lane riders go for KTM (or the Husqvarna/Gas Gas equivalents).

I’ve had a 790R that wouldn’t work when it get wet in a stream in Iceland.

A 790R where optional extras stopped working after a firmware upgrade.

A loan 1290 that cut out ( loss of power) on the motorway at speed because total milage was 100 miles and the dealer hadn’t registered it for road use yet.

A 690 where the fuel pump wouldn’t work after 2000miles

Nope, I’m sticking with GS with its known drive shaft issues, Harley with extortionate service costs and Triumph.

Blimey, you've been through the KTMill, haven't you?

The one really weak link I've experienced with KTM has been the dealers - they're variable in quality, but none of them much good. As a competition bike, mine had just about zero warranty, so there's been no need to take mine to the dealer - I do it all myself. As to the rest, I have a spare fuel pump (£35) that I carry in case mine dies and the battery is kept on trickle charge. I'd also add that the deadlight is shit, the footpegs are made of cheese and the wheel bearings last about ten minutes. I've addressed all of that - relatively inexpensively - with aftermarket parts. So I have no illusions that it's a perfect bike or that it's got fantastic components throughout, as that's manifestly untrue. But the suspension, clutch/gearbox, engine are completely brilliant and it only weighs 105kg.

I've got a couple of specialist mechanics I use for suspension servicing/rebuilds (I'm crap at that) and a bloke who manages to get mousses onto the most uncooperative of wheels (new mousses are the devil's work) but other than that I can do everything.

Tried BMW a few decades back and never again - dealers were appalling and the bikes were never as good as the reputation. I'd not touch a Harley for so many reasons and Triumph don't (yet) do a proper off-road bike. If the forthcoming enduro bike is as good as the rumours suggest I'd be very interested though.

I should add that if I do another off-road adventure then it would be a fully tricked KTM500. But for road riding, no.

Too true, it's absolutely appalling on road (though the vibration through the bars can be sorted reasonably easily). Mine gets trailered to the start of the ride and only gets used on the road for linking lanes.

    Bloody electrics!

So the blade needs an MOT and typically, the front left indicator has stopped working.

It has an after-market mini indicator fitted that integrates into the fairing and looks quite good.

I thought it was LED - the back ones are and have never looked at the front actually flashing before but no it's a bulb so I assumed that had gone.

Turns out the bulb is some odd thing with offset pins but manage to get one, but no that doesn't fix it.

Take the fairing piece off to get at the wiring, what a bodge job, wires twisted together and covered in insulation tape, but to be fair it's holding together and the multimeter shows there's some juice going through the joints.

Worked out you could pull the bulb holder out, which is made of old milk bottle tops or something and as weak AF.

All looks a bit grotty so clean it up with some contact cleaner, stick a bulb in, it works.

Next challenge trying to reassemble it with a bulb that seems too big really into a holder that is so fragile it's unbelievable.

Finally working but what a pita!

    Arghhh!

The joys of classic motorcycles, what better vehicle to turn a simple job into a drama , I feel your pain. If the wiring to the indicator is dodgy it might only be an aftermarket fitment bodge, however if its a symptom of an enthusiastic useless previous owner it maybe worth going through the obvious eg earths ( check for corrosion/ loose connections) Inside the headlight / back of the fairing. This area is often a rats nest of wires. Its a known fact taped joints will always fail at the furthest distance from home ;) DAMHIK

    Well...

    Jackets - 9
    Helmets - 5
    Boots - 5
    Gloves - 7
    Jeans/trs - 5

That's after moving some on over the past year or so. No excuses.

  37. #16087
    Blimey, good question.

6 helmets but nearly always wear my Shoei Neotec or Air GT if I'm feeling sporty!

4 Jackets, 3 Leather and 1 textile. All Furygan as they just fit me perfectly. 90% of the time I just wear a Knox urban pro vest with a hoodie on and kevlar jeans though.

Boots, 4 pairs. Off road, Forma Adventure boots. Have literally done 10's of thousands of miles in them. Wouldn't chose anything else for the rough stuff. Alpinestars ankle boots for the sporty stuff when you need the feedback from the controls.

Gloves. Probably about 6 pairs but Furygan AFS6 like an old pair of jeans that just worl perfectly!

Jeans. Hornee kevlar and some camo kevlar ones by ABG. Both brilliant. Also Have the bottom half of a set of Fieldsheer leathers I probably bought 20 years ago and they are brilliant!

4 bikes at the moment and am looking at one more but currently have no intention of letting any of them go!

I have an AGV helmet and a Hein Gericke jacket but no motorbike.
Well, not one on the road at any rate.

I have an Indian made Royal Enfield 500cc still on Indian plates which was given to me after I stored it for a friend for about 10 years. One day I might see about getting it registered for UK but its about 1000th on my To Do list.

So the helmet is for track days, the jacket is for winter and I wear it often because its so warm and waterproof.

That made me laugh. We are moving to Devon and it was only when I started to pack things up I realised my obsession for watches had moved to bikes and bike gear. I have just counted 6 jackets/riding shirts and 10 pairs of gloves.

Jacket and leather trousers are these, suspect the gloves are the same, helmet has long gone. Pic is from over twenty years ago, how I miss that bike!

Monster ^^^^^^^^^^^^! The bike that saved Ducati.

I still have a Belstaff Nylon jkt ( trialmaster style) that I used to wear when I was 19. It must be poor quality Nylon as it appears to have shrunk over the last 45 yrs or so :)

All these people with new bikes... had this one since 1991, when she was 3 years old and discarded by her previous owner! I see no reason to get rid, especially as I keep getting offered more and more to part with her. The fact that people want to buy her off me seems a good enough reason to keep her!

Currently have a Harley Davidson leather jacket and trousers, which haven't been worn since the Street Bob was cast out. A Richa textile jacket I bought because the leather jacket was too hot, and wore half a dozen times. Now I only wear a Helite mesh airbag jacket, bit like a seatbelt, once you wear one etc.

Used to wear Roadskin jeans but they seem to have shrunk or something, so have a new pair of Hood K7 jeans which surprisingly seem to fit rather better! Seem pretty good quality too.

Helmets are a Shoei XR1100, Valiant LS2 Flip and an Arlen Ness flip thing I bought at a show and hated ever since. Usually wear the LS2 these days, but I know I should wear the Shoei.

Boots are Falco Aviator since I chucked the crap Spada things away. So not too bad really!

A long way from a Lewis Lightning, Lewis Motorway boots, white socks and an open face helmet! Halogen days!
