They certainly don’t on the Bike Safe course.

No - but for their own riders.

Totally oblivious to what I had done, I followed her back to the lights, politely tapped on her window and explained what had happened.

Sadly she told me to fcuk off, so I had no choice but to slam my fist on her expensive wing mirror and wave as I departed.
I had a lady pull out in front of me on the A38 having looked me right in the eye twice. She simply wasn't looking for a bike. I was not a car or truck, her mind was only looking for thiose hazards, so she pulled out. Luckily I had figured she was looking straight though me and I was already braking hard. She nearly had a heart attack when I went past her less than a second after she had pulled out. I made a point of telling her to look as I did so.

A mate showed me something suggesting that all parents should have a running game with their kids where they get points for spotting bikers on the road when you take them anywhere. Get's them looking for them, and years later they stand more chance of noticing bikes when they are drivers, whether they ride themselves or not. Makes sense to me.

I wonder if that's a bit of a myth - although I did see a guy on you Tube telling us it was 'best practice'. I guess he just read the headlines in "Roadcraft", rather than the actual words...

    Indeed.
One could also get on and off the bike while it is still moving...that might demonstrate some confidence in one's ability but doesn't represent good practice.

  7. #13707
was prob classed as good practice years ago to stop ppl riding off with the stand down, these days most bikes wont even start with the side stand down.

like most things in this country the guidelines have not been bought up to date

I can actually see the point of it. If you put the side stand up before you get on the bike then there’s no chance of forgetting and riding off with it down.

    Edit : beaten to it.

You can't ride off with the sidestand down. As soon as you put it in gear - the engine stops.

I had seen the police mounting with sidestand up and asked a pal who was on the bike-force. "It's what they insist we do"

I reckon the guidance has changed - probably when it became commonplace for bikes to not start with the stand down.

The picture above (from the latest Roadcraft) says you should get on the bike, lift it upright (off the stand) and then sweep the sidestand backwards. So, no putting the stand up first.

That depends on what you’re riding.

Crashes where the side-stand had been left down were not not uncommon in the '70/80s when bikes with them started to become more commonplace, but no cut-outs were fitted.

I suspect it's been a long time since you could buy a bike without some sort of cut-out though...

^^^ It was the 70's equivalent of attempting to ride off with the disk lock still in place.

At least you don't have to worry about riding off with the sidestand down these days Tony!

My most embarrassing drop was doing exactly that in the late 90s… with my wife on the back

I know that a few here have done a decat and fitted a booster plug on Triumphs with decent results. I was wondering if anyone had any real life experience of fitting a booster plug without the decat?

I’m looking to do a few upgrades but the new T120 is Euro5 and these now have two of the pipes welded into the cat and requires more then just an X pipe, so contemplating just the booster plug.

I’ve had good experience with the booster plug on my previous bobbers and Speedmaster. It smoothed out low speed running and eliminated stalling..

BUT.. the BP isn't compatible with Euro 5.

This is a copy of the reply I got from Booster plug when I asked if I could use it on my current Speedmaster which is EU5

    “ Hello Andy,

I’m sorry, but the BoosterPlug from the older models will NOT work on your EURO5 bike.

The new emission regulations that are enforced from 2021 are effectively blocking the BoosterPlug (and other fuel injection improvement devices) from making your bike better and safer to ride.

Please see the details here: https://www.boosterplug.com/shop/cms...wer_bikes.html

It’s early days for me as I only got the bike last Thursday, but I’ve completed 360 miles and I have to say up to now I don’t think the BP is needed anyway… whatever Triumph have done to meet EU5 does seem to have improved the way the bike runs.

I can still decat if I want as my pipes aren’t welded and I do have an X pipe from my old bike. I may do it and see how it runs as it’s not a big job, but I may just fit my Shark silencers and leave the cat in… not decided yet..

Thanks for that, very useful and saved me from a silly mistake!

I’m looking at some Remus silencers to slip on and I’ve seen Motone do some exhaust tips that might be a reasonably priced option to try out?

A Speedmaster with flat bars was still my preference but the boss didn’t like the pillion set up, so it was a no go. So I’m going to add some farkles to the T120 and I have to say that I’m very pleased with it to be fair.

^^Glad I could help… I’m pretty sure that the ECU’s on these bikes will easily adapt to a simple silencer change, so go for the ones you like the look of the most👍👍

I love the look of the Bonny 120, and if I could get these crappy old legs to bend so I could get my feet on the pegs, it would be my preferred choice..But I can’t, so the Speedy is the next best thing😎

A better move is move the bike in a weave approaching a junction with a car waiting to pull out. You only need to move a few inches laterally. A sideways moving light is statistically more visible than one moving in a straight line. Keep safe, stay alive

I helped develop the BP for the 1050 Tiger and it ran perfectly with the BP and the Cat. I note though BP have stopped selling for Euro5 bikes due to ecu monitoring requirements.

Does anyone have any experience of specialist dealers who would potentially want to buy my Ducati 1198S?

We have agreed a house purchase which means I will lose my garage (I gain a games room by way of recompense), so sadly I will be motorbike-less for the foreseeable.

Place I bought it from is more interested in Sale or Return, but I have about 6 weeks left before we move, so really want my cash out before I go.

After many many years of bike riding , near 40 if we include the very early bits of riding around lanes before i had a licence, i have grown tired of them.
I dread to think how many different models i owned, raced or unfortunately bent.
Its a shame really as we go through the years of hardship in both time and money and now in my 50's i have spare of both yet not the will or desire to ride.
My son has part taken over with riding MX for a couple of years to the point ive started to think about doing enduros again .
Looking at the obvious EXC KTM's or maybe the more modern Sherco bikes as they review very well.

Anyone else dabble in those areas ?

How close do you want to get to market value ?
The We Buy Any Bike will easily take it off your hands but the market is low and obviously the wrong time of year to be selling .
On the plus side there are alot less 1198 over the previous 1098 and the S model will help.

I would get it on the the usual MCN or even ebay quickly whilst the sun us still out and the credit crisis isnt too deep .

Just an observation, folk in their 50/60’s dont bounce as well as they used to. A couple of enduro guys I know have gone into trials. It can be a frustrating game when you are on a 2021 Gas Gas bike and an old boy on a 1951 Ariel cleans a section you struggled with. All the joys of bike handling and control without the big crashes.

I would echo above , even back in May June the mkt was cooling for second hand private sales. Dealers have been buoyant due to limited new bikes.

Are you on any Ducati forums / owners Facebook etc. Recon you have about a month before many bikers pack up their leathers for the year. Ebay Classified ( appx £20) is an option but you will get some real timewasters so get your weeding tools out.

Not including Enoch in that :)

WBAB, offered £3150 for my Forza… I sold it on eBay for £4700, then got messed about by the buyer, so told him to clear off.. ended up trading it for my new Speedmaster at £4200..

WBAB offered £9000 for my old XDiavel… Dealer gave me £12000 in Part ex..

Based on recent experience I won’t be bothering with eBay or WBAB anytime soon..

First service on the Speedy tomorrow Steve.. 600 miles in a week..

Load of crap. I have to help my right leg over the saddle with my right hand, otherwise I cannot get it high enough to go over it. Not everyone has the same amount of mobility/flexibility. The same with half the stuff that chap on You Tube with his off road riding techniques videos - I haven't got a hope of doing them. Quite often, after a long ride, I have to put the bike on the side stand and then literally fall off onto the floor, I can't get off in the normal sense. Then pick myself up after some seconds of recovery and working out what I have got to do. Doesn't stop me going for a 500 mile day trip though.

Well, this year has been a real journey for my bike ownership

I started the year with a Ducati Diavel and a Suzuki GSXR750.

Out went the Gixxer and in came a 2000 R850GS. Then came an old moped.

Then the diavel went and in came an S1000RR.

Now the moped has gone and I've acquired a 1978 R100RS that has been modestly converted to be a scrambler.

So far, i am enjoying the idiosyncrasies of an old bike, but lets see how much it actually gets used. I had the concept of using of it as a bike to run up to town and to the pub, etc.

I plan to do some scrambler racing akin to the malle mile, beach racing.

Three bikes is dangerous territory for me as i do have a hoarding tendency with my watches! At least this new one is registered as a historic vehicle so no tax or mot necessary!

Oliver I had a R100Rs es South African Police back in the 80’s. It was a wonderful bike. You current bike whilst not “looking” original to its fully faired origins , has some nice touches such as retained kickstart. So it must be an early 78 or even a 77.

Its a big old bike with basic suspension to be hammering along a beach though. Im sure Neil ( Steptoe) on here will chip in as he has had one or two airheads.

    It's insurance renewal time.

I've been with BeMoto for a while, but they were expensive when I switched to the S1000R from the GSX-S 1000 & the renewal was nearly £600 incl breakdown (which they insist on including despite me not needing it) & helmet & leathers & legal expenses.

MCN Compare gave several options under £350. Bikesure looked to be the best & only up increased by £30 to include helmet & leathers & the mods on my bike.

Any reason not to go with Bikesure?

BMF & MCN were the next most competitive via MCN compare, but I've not gone to them to bespoke the quotes.

From memory, last time I used Bikesure - got the quote, with the T&C etc.

When I took the policy - all of a sudden the bikes required to be chained to a ground anchor in the garage (no mention prior to that).

    Sharp practise.

Give Cornmarket a call (Belfast). My policy not only accepts the considerable mods - but covers the bikes with those mods.

It was a cracking day up here so took the Triumph out for a couple of hundred miles. Was getting a bit nippy towards the end but a great day for the 1st October...

    Cheers,

First ride today since fitting the bar risers to my S1000R.

Wow, what a difference in the comfort, for just 35mm up and 15mm back.

So finally got myself my first big bike.

A 2021 Honda CB650R, after I almost went for a lovely Triumph Street Twin that had the most beautiful racing green custom painted tank.

I’m really happy so far after my first ride out yesterday. So smooth, powerful (well it is for me), and surprisingly easy to ride.

I was concerned about the 810mm seat height but needn’t have been as it was absolutely fine.

Slow man-handling stuff was a little challenging but I suppose that comes with the territory, especially after jumping up from the Monkey.

Here’s hoping for some more dry sunny days before winter sets in.

Congratulations, that’s all the bike you really need.

    Nice one.

What bolt on goodies are you getting? Crash bungs & paddock stand bobbins highly recommended & looking at that mahoosive number plate carrier can I recommend a tail tidy? Evotech are to my mind better quality than R&G but both do decent stuff.

I hope you are not suggesting that my new pride and joy is the equivalent of a cheap casio!!

Is this a new model? I haven't seen one of those before, looks like a Honda 400/4 updated for today's roads. Hope you enjoy it, looks a cracker. Cheers, John B4

What bolt on goodies are you getting? Crash bungs & paddock stand bobbins highly recommended & looking at that mahoosive number plate carrier can I recommend a tail tidy? Evotech are to my mind better quality than R&G but both do decent stuff.
The seller threw in a tail tidy and some crash bungs, not the best quality so I’m not sure I’ll be putting those on. I will probably look for some better quality options.

I struggled with the reach of the clutch lever yesterday (not sure why it’s not adjustable from Honda like the brake lever is?). It gave me some discomfort (cramp in my hand) after a couple hours.

So an adjustable clutch lever is the first port of call I think. Any recommendations would be welcome.

It’s been available since 2019, this one is the slightly revised 2021 version.

Basically an unfaired naked version of the CBR650R.

Well done Os, I thought you were looking at 650 twins, this is on another level, a lovely looking machine that will help you transition into
the world of larger more powerful steeds.
