Headed up Teesdale today and over to Alston. It looked like the gritters may have been out last night. My wife had to scrape the ice off her windscreen this morning.

I hate to say it but BMW GS discussions are now as rife and boring as Rolex the ones.

I went to Cardiff in my car last week its painful driving anywhere in that area not just the 20s but the 50s on the motorways.

You find yourself constantly worrying if you are at the right speed rather than driving safe,I wont be back there thats a fact.

I met some really nice friendly, farmers ouside the Senedd who told me how it is badly effecting them along with other things like lamb imports from NZ etc.etc.

Its the same thing in England people forcing there views on others to make themselves feel important (we have one on here does the same).

    but

A spray of the threads on the preload (and a few other areas) with a clear chain-lube would help the longevity of that shock.

(I'd use a good cavity wax)

I'm seriously thinking about custom paintwork for the T120; party just because I'd like it to be "different", and partly because this should be the last bike I ever buy so I feel free to do with it as I please.

This is the kind of thing I have in mind, but I'm mulling over whether to just go with the tank or to make it a bit more of a complete transformation (and include both the front & rear fenders and the two side panels). Any thoughts?

That’s the same colour as my Bobber. It’s called Moreno red looks great in the sunlight.

Personally I think the Bonny suits a 2 colour tank rather than a solid one colour as it’s quite a bit bigger than the bobber tank. For inspiration I’d be looking at old photos to see if there’s something from back in the day that catches the eye.

    Something like this maybe?

Yeah, I was aware that it was a Bobber colour, and yours certainly looks lovely. My idea is to have light and dark accents, though, as suggested by the photo that I've shared.

I've actually spent weeks looking at the traditional Bonnie paint schemes. I do like them very much, but it's not the look that I want for mine (that said, I do especially like the DGR 2023 paintwork too).

I think it’d look good with mudguards and side panels painted to match, but I’d be also looking at some form of pinstriping to break it up a bit.

I'm thinking the same, but I suspect that's where I need to look for some inspiration from specialist customisers. I definitely want painted logos rather than badges, and I also have some ideas for the side panels.

    So I bought a CRF250L a few weeks ago.

I really enjoyed it in the first week I had it, but my main issue was it felt strangled at the top end.

Usual mods for these are holes in the airbox to free up the air flow, an EJK fuel controller to richen things a bit, and a more free flowing exhaust.

So as for the airbox mod, turns out that's been done. But it had a manky old OEM air filter in it, so I ordered a K&N, which definitely made it feel a bit happier.

While I was doing that had the seat off a lo and behold it has a fuel controller, albeit an FMC one, but that is a rebadged EJK. Which is interesting because it suggests it has had an FMC exhaust on it at some point. We'll come back to that... but I think it was too rich for a bike with an OEM exhaust on it.

I lucked out on buying a full system Delkevic on Ebay that was like new for not much money, my main motivation being the OEM system fitted a) weighs over 5kgs and b) was rusting badly c) sounds pants

Fitted the Delkovic over the weekend which took look much longer than planned because getting the OEM downpipe off was hard...stuck fast hard by rust (and thank God I changed it as it was corroded AF). Struggling to find all my tools since we moved so I ended up going to Screwfix and buying a mallet that looked it would do the job while it sat in penetrating oil, which did the job nicely, unfortunately that was the light gone for Saturday so had to continue today.

My next concern was getting the old copper gasket from the head, but lo and hold none fitted! (Remember my comment re FMC...I'm guessing it had one then when it was sold in the past it was removed and the OEM exhaust was refitted... without a gasket!) . Which meant I had to clean off a bit off crud before fitting the new exhaust.

    After that plain sailing.

So on to the test ride...wow, what a difference! I'm guessing I've maybe added 2bhp with the things I've done (to a 23bhp engine), but it feels so much freer and happier.

Sound-wise, it's just the right side of obnoxious, pretty fruity on full chat, but pootling along at 30 in 6th it's quite quiet. I'm not concerned about upsetting the neighbours!

I've also mastered (to some degree getting) on off and on it, but haven't ridden off road yet, I want to be fully comfortable with it first and get used to it.

I love this little thing, and riding on roads with the throttle nailed and not getting into trouble is great fun!

    Hmm...turns out less is more!

Good idea with the personalisation though, I'd go with something shocking like orange with red pinstriping or lime green with dark green pinstriping, that's just me though

Definitely include the mudguards and side panels Tony…you get the full look that way. Also a great job to have done over the winter, that’s when I did mine. Feels like getting a new bike in the spring.

Thruxton Final Edition announced by Triumph

Looks like the end of the line is approaching for this wonderful bike. I was watching a YouTube video from Motobob earlier and he was providing some numbers for café racer sales generally, and Thruxton sales compared to the Speed Twin specifically. It does look like the bottom has fallen out of the market for the Thruxton and that it’s no longer a viable line to keep producing. Shame, because it’s a marvellous bike; I wonder if they’ll now make a similarly pimped Speed Twin R.

It's looking like hipsters have had their fill of motorcycling, hence the decline in kaff racer style bikes.
On a positive, they brought a few refreshing ideas to the table, but I won't be sorry to see them go.
Their culture was 100% responsible for the unnecessary butchery of many a good classic.

    More bike related stuff

The Speed twin is now every bit as good as the Thruxton R since they put the new front end on it. With equally good looks and an easier riding position for the more mature, it was bound to take a hit.

That said, the Thruxton R FE looks. absolutely fantastic in green. I wonder how much it’s going to cost though?

In excess of £15k, apparently. Despite improvements the components on the Speed Twin don’t stack up against the TTR/RS so plenty of room for an R in the line up.

Thruxton and Bobber are my favourite models to look at. Real shame to see this being killed off. I did a test ride on one of the older 865 Thruxtons a while back (in green actually, which was stunning in the sun light).. full intention of buying.. but my back was already starting to niggle after 40mins so bought a Bonnie instead.
I’d imagine used prices will hold up well for these now.

I'm sure they will. Strangely, I never had back/comfort issues with my TTR - in fact, I found it a more comfortable ride than the R9T that preceded it.

2 of my mates have Thruxton R’s. The older of the 2 (69) couldn’t get on with the riding position, and was going to sell. But then he spotted a handlebar conversion kit on eBay and thought it was worth a try with higher bars. I fitted the kit for him, and it made all the difference. 2 years later he still has the bike and loves it..

I couldn't live with the thruxton riding positon so bought a Speed twin then upgraded the suspension front and back to K-Tech, got a power commander and a custom map made so its fuels properly and it's a dream to ride now although I may have to sell it as I never have time to ride it these days

It was the National Rally (https://www.nationalroadrally.co.uk/nrr/index.php) so - if memory serves - 12 midday to 12 midday. They seem to have changed it now so it's a 2-day ride rather than a 24 hour session.

Myself and a mate on near-identical Honda Melody-minis - mine with the touring luggage, long-range fuel tank and car phone - managed to get a bronze award.

We could have got silver, but the mandatory rest stops (health and safety gone mad) meant it simply wasn't possible with out sub-30mph top speed.

Sitting on a spike and being beaten with a stick would be more comfortable than riding an R9T, so that's not setting the bar very high!

Having learnt from this thread the alarming news that jackets cam breed like watches, I've made an attempt at shopping just once: Richa Cyclone goretex - discontinued and discounted but still available in my sizes.

Sharing a name with one of my favourite albums helps.

We don't all have a gazillion jackets!

I have three which for me is quite shocking really!

My Dainese leather jacketsI bought in mid '90s (along with the matching trousers).

Then I have a Frank Thomas waterproof/winter jacket bought in 2001.

Then this year I bought a Rev'it Eclipse mesh jacket as it was so bloody hot at times.

I suppose I have the added bonus of still fitting into stuff I bought (gulp) nearly thirty years ago...

The blurb for the Cyclone calls it "four seasons" but I've been warned by the guy in the shop that as and when summer around here has one of its truly summery patches then it'll be too much. Right now, that's a plentiful distance away.

Ooh, that Eclipse is available in silvery white. And is only about £100. Right, that's filed away.

I have the Eclipse as one of my summer options. It’s a great jacket, and Howard/hhhh has it in the colour you like… it’s very nice indeed.

I have a Cyclone (and a few others). It's a great jacket but I'd agree, it'll be no good in the summer. That's when you'll be needing a Klim Marrakesh...
