Just buy a 16600.
Hi all, I actually posted this in WTB but I've realised that the collective knowledge of TZ goes way beyond SC. Hopefully the wis within TZ community can help me find what I'm looking for.
WTB 5k dive watch.
That's not 5k meters deep but £5k cash avoiding the £ sign in the title.
Yes, I'm in the nice position of being able to blow 5k on a watch for myself. I've checked SC and if that Good Planet GMT was on a bracelet I'd already be done.
Ideas would be a great help. Criteria are few but realistic.
1. 150m absolute minimum depth rating.more would be good but silly depth ratings are unnecessary. My dive computer tells the time.
2. No Arabics. Baton or blob type dials only. No Roman numerals either thanks. Simple dots or dashes work for me.
3. Good residuals. There, I've said it. No I don't expect it to be an investment but I don't want it to drop like a brick as soon as I buy it.*
4. Fair price. Happy to pay the going rate. Don't quote rrps. Unless it's Rolex, then happy to pay rrp.
5. No Panerai. Just not for me. I'm sure that they're great but not for me.
I know it's quite a lot to ask but I'm sure there are some great watches out there sitting loved but unworn in drawers and safes. Trade them in for cash and go and buy that Caterham 7 lookalike thingy from SC and have some fun!
Sorry if it sounds like an advert but that's because it was originally.
Let me have your ideas.
Thanks
Just buy a 16600.

Why does it have to be 5k, you can have my 2254.50 for that
Find a second hand Bell & Ross BR02.
If you have £5k and no imagination get a Rolex…
Vintage is out of the question? Or will you actually be diving with it?
As has been said - my money would be a Rolex 14060m or an Omega 2254 (get the Omega and plenty of change too😀)
SD 16600
or
Sub 14060
would be my choices and would depend of whether I wanted/needed a date or not.
or I’d be saving a huge amount and buying an Omega SMP300m Diver.
My only leftfield choices are two hibeat Seikos:
SBEX001 or the new SLA25.
The GO Diver looks nice to me too though.
It's just a matter of time...
I'm just back from holiday and this watch coped very well with the rigours of the pool. The titanium makes it very easy to wear and imo will be a future classic.

Out of interest, how much would a bracelet cost for the Good Planet ?
I don’t lack imagination C and I hope my own watch collection reflects that…. I’m well aware that many/ most would suggest a sub @ £5k and it’s a solid buy Iif that’s your thing…. I just feel it’s a shame that the entire thread (bar a couple of exceptions) are talking about the same ubiquitous/ classic (delete as appropriate) option
Every other thread on here is a Rolex warranty card thread and why I spend less time on watch talk…. It gets a bit tedious when there is so much more inferesting stuff out there…. Heince my flippant comment…. I’m rowing against the tide though :-)
I’d get an Aquastar Deepatar for that money…. Your money would be safe too! Take it easy in the pool though!!!

Stretch the budget a bit for the daddy of dive watches?
No bracelet with this one, but you’d dive in rubber anyway right?
There are a few Good Planet gmts on bracelet available, couple on WF at but over 4k
or this

Blancpain Trilogy GMT (or 2000) if you can live with a few numbers to enliven the batons...
Save yourself about £4,930 and buy a Vostok Amphibia.
Looking back at dive watches I have had, at around that budget, and a bit different, the Omega Ploprof which if bought at the right price, you won’t lose too much :)
Otherwise Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver.
I think someone already mentioned true Grand Seiko divers, although the clasps put me off a bit on those
Otherwise check out Linde Werdelin, or the Omega Planet Ocean Chronos
I would definitely go for the SD 16600.

Tudor Black Bay GMT, leaving change (if you can find one...)

Surprised no body has mentioned a Marine Master 300 or Sinn U1 both maintain residuals if bought second hand and have diving pedigree, both are a fair bit cheaper than 5K, in fact you could get both for that money and flip which one you dont like.
How about a less mainstream choice . (Under budget )
UTS.

1000m or 4000m if you prefer .
Black or Blue, Bracelet or Rubber.

Sea dweller is the obvious choice and rightly so!
And chance of a Blancpain FF on a NATO for that money?

There's a cool idea, I love the Trilogy GMT. A bit 90s in its styling (that's a plus in my book) but totally confident about it, looks like nothing else on the market, and just an utterly non-nonsense watch - well, maybe with the exception of the exhibition caseback but I know most people prefer it or at least don't mind.
What about an IWC Aquatimer?
I always had an interest in these Andersman divers

Just use your SDc or sub.
muke
What about a Tudor Pelagos with blue dial. It’s under your budget so that gives you a head start on your next acquisition. Alternatively the new Black Bay 58 is you can find one. Again, less than budget but a great option.
Alternatively, 14060m !

Omega Ploprof.
Can I ask WHY you want another dive watch?
You have 2 Rolexes that do the job already, so what's the primary motivation?
Is it another 'investment' watch or do you just prefer divers and fancy another watch?
If the latter, that Titanium Omega certainly looks nice. A Proplof is probably a decent bet for a longer term investment, too (normal disclaimers apply! ). Neither ape the Submariner look, so will be different enough.
I can't personally see the point of yet another nearly the same Rolex diver, but you can't really argue with the residuals if that is what's really important to you.
The Blancpain is quite nice, but I wouldn't spend that much on the Bathyscaphe, personally, and I don't think it'll hold its value well.
If you could find a proper Fifty Fathoms in budget it'd be a good choice (and what I'd take over any Rolex, personally).
Some of the smaller makers (like GO and VC - Sue me if they don't make divers, I can't recall exactly who they were as I'm never going to be in the market for a £5K watch), etc make some interesting looking divers, but if you buy new, you'll probably take a spanking if you try and sell them.
A used Sinn Arktis (if you can find one) is comfortably in budget and almost certain to hold its value (at the very least), but it's not a £5K watch and probably never will be.

Thanks Snowman, great post . No I don't need another Rolex diver or indeed another watch at all but I like watches and if I can spend 5k on one, own it and use it for a year or two and still get 4.5k for it I'd ve happy. Not sure about the more boutique type brands as the market is limited.
Yes know the main focus shouldn't be on future values but it's a nice feeling owning something that's increasing in value as you use it.
Save yourself some cash, and pick up a GO Sports Evolution:

JLC Deep Sea - might need to stretch the budget a bit.
You're going to need to buy used and very cannily to get a 90% return on anything other than another Rolex, I think.
Any other brand, and 12-24 months is going to see a 30%-50% drop in value from new (at best), assuming the model is still available.
If you can find something limited edition or a sought after OOP model from other brands, you might be able to hope for that kind of return.

I would stretch the budget and go for a fifty fathoms on a NATO. Wears smaller than the case size suggests, and the sapphire bezel is stunning.

Doxa either one of the new aqualung editions or a vintage one
How about a Breitling Avenger Seawolf - plenty of change from £5k and nobody can argue that it’s not a ‘proper’ dive watch with that depth rating...
