Thread: Nominations for clearest dial to read the time?

  1. #1

Nominations for clearest dial to read the time?

    As the title says.........
What watch would you nominate for having the best (clearest) dial for instant read of the time?

I waver between these three; Sinn 656, Sinn EZM3 and Rolex no-date Sub.

    What would you nominate?

Sinn UX for being readable even from extreme angles, with the EZM 3 being a close second:

That gets my vote too (or the DA36).

I think any watch with a bezel detracts from it's clarity of 'readability' (not that I don't like them!).

Out of the watches I own/have owned the DA36 is easily the most legible and from virtually any angle.

    Thank you Scott....
I was going to suggest IWC Mk 11, Eddie's SBII, and my IWC 3706 (classic dial and hands, not the newfangled Spitfire version!!!)

    Sorry, no photos!

    Effortless.

For me it is the PRS 20.

Seconded - especially when tweaked with some slightly larger hands and a dose of AR coating inside and out. Probably the clearest dialled watch I've owned, in any light.

...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Coincidentally, someone told me of Botta Designs and their wares from the Black Forest. They claimed their pieces are readable even by people with poor eyesights. I find the Argos [attachment=0:3ku8chj7]argos_automatik_detail_2_big.jpg[/attachment:3ku8chj7] to be quite attractive. What do you guys think?

If i'm looking at watches in my collection it would have to be this Seiko 7C43 Professional diver from 1991 :)
Large white hands on a black background means it's very clear to my eyes 8) One of my favourite watches too!

Re: Nominations for clearest dial to read the time?

Not gona post a pick, just to say any of the types we have been talking about (British or German mil styles, diver and field) BUT with either no date or a very subtle almost hidden date like Sinn do with the red date numerals.

As an example compare the PRS-14, CWC divers to the same design with lots of junk on there like day/date etc. The KHS mission 2 is a good example of a nice clean design messed with to make a nonsense 'tactical' watch.

For chronographs my feeling is not to have hour numerals e.g. speedmaster.

A different coloured minute hand helps with legibility but I don't like the look of them that much, although red tipped seconds hand or all red seconds looks good and works because it doesn't interfere with everything else basically the seconds hand needs to be a colour that doesn't distract from the hours and minutes.

The clock at the top of this page is a great example of the above requirements put into practice.

Re: Nominations for clearest dial to read the time?

I would respectfully suggest the Sinn UX - during daylight. I have had quite a few watches now and by far, this is easiest to read. Great for meetings for the angle of view advantage. I really like this watch.
For night time, anything Tritium, like a bloody torch they are!

Fascinated that you choose that one Dave as you have a number of the most popular contenders, 656, U1, DC36 etc.
No one else (other than me at the beginning) has said the Sub yet, and of course the SAR dial is very much in the style of the Sub.

It's also interesting how some prefer the larger flieger style hands while others find the slimmer pilot style clearer to read.

If we get enough of a consensus from this little exercise, I'll probably try a photoshop mock-up combining the most popular elements and see what we come up with 8)

I am surprised to see (unless I am guilty of speed reading and missed it...), that no one has nominated the PRS-20. For an guy who wears bifocals, this is easily the quickest and best read... Your mileage may vary...

    Thanks for the photo, Eddie.

Personally I think black hands on a white dial has the most contrast as shown on some of the Damsakos pictured earlier.

Although this old Leonidas is a chronograph it is my easiest reader.

    Amongst my watches, this one:

In practice it's very clear, as you can see:

I don't think there is any clear winner as in 'the world's most legible watch'. Military diver style comes a long way, though.

Funny you mention that. My father in law likes the Italian a lot, since at 88 his eyesight is far from perfect....Not that I care: I like the watch too much to give it away...

Re: Nominations for clearest dial to read the time?

Some mainstream watches that watch-types rarely look at are often paragons of clarity. Almost as though when not not concerned with connoisseur appeal, watch designers just get on and do the job.

There are better examples than the following, but this is the sort of thing I mean -
