Thread: New arrival - 1675 Root Beer

New arrival - 1675 Root Beer

I promised myself... and more importantly, Mrs C that 2018 would not be a year of costly watch purchases. I managed to get her to understand that I simply couldn’t leave a Tudor BBB in a shop window that we ‘just happened’ to be walking past in March... but that would be it for 2018, I had all I needed for now and it would be churlish of me to want or expect more...

Fast forward to a few weeks back and I genuinely did happen to stumble upon a watch that I have never been able to get out of my system... a 1675 GMT Root Beer from 1974, TT Jubilee, nipple dial, open sixes and nines, the lot!

Now this is a watch that I have sought opinions on many times from friends, fellow enthusiasts and even this forum when I first joined... many times I have been told it is loud, garish, 70’s porn star and just plain horrible... but I love it!

When this became available from a trusted and previously used source, I knew it was time. It came with recent service paperwork from Rolex and I could not be happier.

The jubilee has the expected stretch for its age but if I treat it right it should see me out. I will probably end up putting it on a strap to tone down the bling if I want to go under the radar.

I can’t claim to have a vast knowledge of this field and have very much bought the seller... I would welcome the opinions and advice of those with a greater understanding of what is right with these older pieces and would love to hear what you think

I know, it’s not for everyone... but it’s definitely for me.

That's a great watch. I'm a fan of the Root Beer. It definitely splits opinions but I love 'em.

A great looking example. However for me I'd have to change the bracelet for leather, very dark brown with no contrast stitching.

Nothing wrong with that, love the dial. Good shout to swap the jubilee bracelet for leather though, or maybe the right colour Nato.

The big question is, does Mrs.C know yet??

Case looks very sharp, I take it this was restored at RSC to achieve those crisp bevels..

Always reminds me of Clint Eastwood in FireFox the root beers although he wore a RB in many other films -

I bloody love a root beer and yours is an excellent example. I can see why you're thrilled. Lovely crisp bevels and no degrading of the dial which can sometimes hit them.
I tend to calm them down a bit by taking off the jubilee and wearing on leather but if you like going full baller then do!
    Enjoy it :)

Thanks all... I was waiting with bated breath for the replies, it is a well documented minefield and has taken me a while to commit to what I believed was a ‘good un’

A quick scrabble through the strap bag and I found I had a few brown leathers but nothing that hit me as a perfect combo... maybe the strap-works would work in the interim?

My dirty secret is that I do love a bund and recently bought a Fury bund from Steveo that would fit this and I’m not sure I can resist having a go!

Mrs C is now aware of this purchase... apparently her attempts to save me from myself aren’t going too well. She has told me many times over the years that she isn’t keen on this watch, particularly the jubilee but now that she has seen it in the flesh she is rather taken with the watch and kind of agrees that the bracelet does go with the watch. After a brief discussion this morning she is pleased that the leather strap is on the table as this was always her preference... as long as it isn’t ‘that bund thing!’

That may be one concession I owe her?

I found that an inky navy blue suede strap by Kauffman set the browns off in the root beer brilliantly. Was my favourite to go with it. Animalone on here can lay hands to them.

Thanks, that’s food for thought. If I’m honest I hadn’t thought past brown and that definitely sounds interesting.

Very nice, but I am biased (16753 nipple dial root beer owner)

I'm sure this probably an easily answered question, so apologies if I'm being dense. Why is the 9 open and the 6 closed in the photos in the original post. I thought a date wheel would be either all open 6 and 9s or all closed?

  22. #22
All 6s and 9s are open on mine expect the 26. This is correct for this... don’t know why they did it?

I’m no expert but have read several pieces on closed and open 6s and 9s. There seem to be a few variations that are correct when it comes to open 6s and 9s

A lovely watch, would look good on an Erika's original to tone down the bling.

Looks like a really nice example, I think you've done well there - congrats and enjoy wearing it!

These are really quite rare, certainly much more so than a steel 1675. Most unlikely that you would encounter someone wearing another. Enjoy it without a second thought.

Clint had better screw that crown down on his before ditching in the sea.

Fantastic. When I first saw one in the Rolex booklet that I used to obsess over before I bought my Pepsi GMT in 1986, I didn't like the look at all and couldn't imagine who would want one but the passing of time has given them a magnificently retro / vintage vibe.

Thanks all, I really appreciate the feedback and comments.

Does anyone know what the code for the bracelet on the Rolex service papers means... does this indicate a correct bracelet?

Sadly I am no photographer, but here is mine fresh from RSC St James. Can’t actually remember what kind of strap it is - I think a Hirsch something or other. It is probably just a tiny little bit lighter than I would like, but if memory serves it wasn’t overly expensive and I’m very happy with it.
Buckle purchased for what I consider to be an excellent price from this very forum.

That would mean that Rolex were happy the bracelet was genuine (it would be a 62523). The little sequence of numbers usually signifies how many links were in place. They separated the bracelets from the watches during service for refinishing, hanging them on a rack at one point in the process like so many mackerel being smoked. I always wondered how they prevented mix-ups, as they do not seem to record any more specific detail. We ourselves separate bracelets when servicing / refinishing, but having recorded the annual / monthly date code (R11, AD2 etc) and a grading for the bracelet's condition. While not unique, the chances of having two of the same type of bracelet with the same date codes are very slim.

I’ve never really liked these, until fairly recently, must be a age related condition 😁

I have just taken delivery of a few perlons, black, blue, brown and grey, my first ever and I must say my first impression is really positive, I can see these being a summer staple.

I have taken a few quick pics to see how this looks on different colours

And I know I am in a gang of one... but I really do rather like the look of this...

    I’ll get my coat!

Perlons don't work for me, maybe it's the lack of tapering but that doesn't work at all.

The Bund? Well, maybe. I would need to see it IRL. Can you send the watch to me for feedback please? I will return it within a year or so.

I agree about the perlons for this watch, it was to get an idea of colours really... I’ve always had a soft spot for a bund but this is really for an old sekonda I’m having repaired that used to belong to my grandad, he always wore it on a bund so I will too. But I genuinely do like this on it.

I agree a leather strap would look better than a bund on this watch! The Mrs has taste!
