Helicopter?
i need to be in kingston ( upon thames that is, not jamaica ) tomorrow evening, this will involve a dreaded shlep across the m25 anti clockwise from the junction with the A1.
preferably i would like to arrive in kingston around 6/ 6.30.
what can i do to minimise my chances of getting absolutely muntered in the rush hour traffic?
leave earlier / later or not at all?
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Helicopter?
It's not going to help but i find it so unpredictable for obvious reasons. I've even left at 4am once to avoid traffic only to be greeted by a sea of brake lights and a long wait by Heathrow. Motorbike?
Just google maps and check the traffic before you leave and allow extra extra time
cheers geezers. unfortunately the chopper is in repair at the moment, plus there are a few of us going so motorbike isn't really an option unless we do a display team special for the full 300 mile round trip.
google maps are suggesting the north circular. wtf.
negotiating that is going to be like hamburger hill at that time of day.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Have you got waze on your phone?
I find the setting an arrival time feature very useful.
Plus it'll find rat runs off and around the m25 if traffic is at a standstill.
Another vote for Waze. Even gets me through Bogotá traffic.
cheers doll(z).
waze it is.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
My honest opinion is that you need to allow an extra hour on journey time or leave early, get wherever you are going, relax and wait with a coffee. You need to get round arguably the worst stretch 18-13 at rush hour. It is guaranteed to be rammed with commuters, waze, google maps, tomtom; they can't make the volume of traffic disappear, lots of others will also be trying to avoid the queues with similar tactics.
Good luck, I hate that bloody road.
A large "Motorway Maintenance" sticker on the back of the car will enable you to drive on the hard shoulder.
It's the only suggestion I have, Dave. Sorry.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
I’d stay well clear of the M25 and if you must use it go anti-clockwise to J10 then A3 —> Kingston. Clockwise will be almost twice as far and involve the Dartford crossing. I would come down the A1/A1M to the very bottom, Jct 1, known as Staples Corner. Head west (right) on the North circular A406 —> Chiswick. Follow the A406 north circular over Kew Bridge —> Richmond. Just over Kew Bridge the road splits in a Y, south circular (A205 goes left). Take the right fork towards Richmond then you’ll pick up signs for Kingston I would think. The A406 will be busy but nowhere near as bad as the M25 I suspect. Also another note for WAZE as it will alert you of Police etc en route but beware it will almost certainly try and take you on the M25 and you may need to follow your own route and ignore it until you get to certain points.
Hi,
I'm local to Kingston and have to travel from the A1 round past Heathrow at least once a week. I would recommend that you leave no later than 3.45-4.00pm. Personally I would leave the M25 at junction 12 (M3) and head down to the end of the motorway (approx 5 miles) and then follow your sat nav from there. Going any further round the M25 will be very painfull ( I have to get off at Junction 11 and sometimes 10 and both junctions are horrible). You will hit traffic from Heathrow onwards, but stick to the motorway is my 12 years of advice!
Good Luck
John
No help, but I'm reminded of this

Leave about 1 am you get there in time.
I leave about a hour before you leave to be sure.
I think Dave is stuck on the m25.
