Payment never went through, was a hacked account as suspected.

Looking at the email address attached to the paypal account, I'd say a hacked account but on the off chance... I still went for it - the worst that can happen is that Paypal/ebay refund me.
The only thing to watch out for are odd messages or strange email login requests...

Indeed. I got the standard emails from eBay, nothing unusual. Let's see what arrives, or not as the case may be.
You'll get your money back, paying via paypal. However the scammer will withdraw it and get away with several hundred pounds scot-free, which I'm not comfortable supporting.
And the scammer will now have your email and home address. I think this is one to avoid personally… if it sounds too good to be true, etc.
