Any Structural Engineers / Builders Around - RSJ across 5m Span at Back of the House

We had a structural engineer visit to undertake some plans and calculations for our new rear extension. We are looking to knock out some load bearing brickwork at the back of the house to create a 5m opening.

I just assumed that the SE was just going to say we needed a full steel box frame because of the wide opening. The SE advised an RSJ across the top sitting on the pier walls, and the a reinforced concrete layer across the bottom 5m stretch of the existing foundations, on concrete pads underpinned into the pier walls. The pier wall would act as the support so no need for vertical RSJs. I got the impression that the SE believed this would be the simplest and cheapest option.

Anyone in the trade or an SE who can advise that this seems about right?

The mention of underpinning makes me a bit nervous and I wonder if this requires a more specialist builder. Is a steel box frame expensive and overkill?

I should have asked more questions of the SE, but you think about his stuff when they’ve gone. Photo illustrating centre wall to be removed. We're knocking down the crappy conservatory and replacing with an extension.

I'd be more inclined to suggest a goalpost arrangement on a suitable minimum 1200 x 1200 x whatever depth to good ground excavation with a minimum of 600mm concrete mass fill. Point load distribution etc etc.
I'm not a struccy, only a lowly builder of 35yrs on the job and I'd not argue directly with an SE. I would however ply him with questions.

I'm getting the impression you'd like to get him back on the blower and ask him more ??

I would, but not 100% sure what to ask. Maybe I should ask what other options are available and why he has gone for the option he has chosen?

    Any advice would be useful.

That'd be a good start and ask is his chosen method the most economical (it sounds less expensive than what I suggested, I will say)

I appreciate you don't want to appear to undermine his professionalism but you're paying him to be able to ask him these questions...
