After some advice. Is the below watch real and how much should I pay? It’s a 2001 model. I’ve been after an entry level Rolex bi metal for ages and this got offered to me. Any advice much appreciated. The crown does go in was just out for the pic.

A private sale.
What is your confidence in the seller - do you trust them completely? Someone you just met? Etc
Once you establish if it is genuine / not Franken, it will come down to whether you think the price is good
These days with Rolex it's about what your happy to pay and what there happy to except pretty simple!

The sale is private from a friend of a friend, who is in the industry so pretty happy with that. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t being taken for a mug. Thank you for any advice guys.
In that case, if you are confident all is in order, it will come down to price. If you are happy to share what he wants for it, you will get good advice on whether that is good value for money

Seems expensive to me. I have a similar age white Roman dial 16233 box and papers in stock which is £700 cheaper than what the private seller is asking.
I usually feel concerns when people sell watches with the wrong box. Not a big deal but worth noting.

Hmmmm I may have a word with seller then and see what they say.
Maybe the seller got the idea he would get more for it with the box.... um no. You get more for it with the correct box.
Seems a very high price, and not a correct set - personally I’d be walking away from this one, quickly.
It's just a matter of time...
Buy the seller. 4.7k seems A lot though,I was thinking around 4K

The certificate seems to be very fresh/crisp given it is purportedly 17 years old?

Seller has the right box and has sent pics. How much would be more suitable? The one linked in here is 13 years older so not the best comparison.
Wow that’s seriously about 1k overpriced. Pass on that for sure. You can pic that model up on eBay for 3500-4000 depending on condition papers box etc.
Personally I’d be looking at £3800 max for a personal sale.
Massively overpriced atm. My opinion only though.

I’d pay £500-£1k more for a watch from somebody I trusted to be honest. Ebay and bargain hunting is great when you have some experience and know exactly what you’re looking at, risky otherwise though.Originally Posted by Ivan Drago

If you can buy substantially cheaper from a bricks and mortar establishment then the one you’re looking, Op, is vastly overpriced!

Just to say thanks for the advice guys. I’ve passed on the watch and going to give Milton’s a ring in the morning about the one posted in here by Dave.

Agree with previous comments, it’s way overpriced. Provided the bracelet’s good and the bezel’s still sharp I wouldn’t dismiss it, but the price would need to be £1200 cheaper. The watch may need servicing soon and that’s around £450ish, something else to factor into the price.
Stretched/ worn bracelets are the biggest problem with these, you really need to handle the watch to assess this..........or take the word of a trusted dealer like Mr Milton!
I’m a big fan of these bimetal Datejusts, especially with slver or white dials. Sadly a lot are in poor condition if they’ve lead a hard life.

as most above - seems pricey/... £3750 would seem a more appropriate number.. but would pay 4k if you are happy with the seller
Be careful, anyone in the watch repair trade will happily fit non propriety parts because they have ready access to them.
Nothing wrong with that in principle but it will come back to bite you on the bum if you ever take it to a Rolex agent for a service.
With anything like this, factor the cost of a full Rolex service into the price and for that model I would bank on around £650 as there is always something like a lens or something that they will insist on replacing. This way you will have the real article with several years of life ahead of it.
