Raffle for GOSH & MSF - Speedbird III, 2 x Seikos, Orient, G-Shock, Vostok & DVD!

Charity Raffle for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and Médecins Sans Frontières

The Speedbird III was pipped in the earlier poll, but its turn has finally arrived. Several members have generously added to the prize pot. There must be something to meet most peoples tastes here (but sorry, no Rolex!) As in January, as well as one of 'Laura’s Charities' we are raising funds in parallel for another deserving cause not necessarily connected to childhood cancer. I'm sure that most TZers are well aware by now, but for more background on Laura's story and the support provided by many superb organisations there is a thread in the BP: http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...rsonal-Message

    The Charities

The two charities need little introduction. They are well known, and both mean a lot to us personally.

Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity enhances Great Ormond Street Hospital’s (GOSH) ability to transform the health and wellbeing of children and young people, giving them the best chance to fulfil their potential.

Laura was treated at GOSH for the first two months after being transferred to the UK. We benefitted from research and equipment funded by the hospital’s charity arm, and from the great personal assistance offered to families at an incredibly stressful time. The hospital simply could not achieve the level of life-saving work and remain at the forefront of child healthcare without the charitable support. We are eternally grateful that we were able to have access to this simply outstanding establishment.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

I visited Ecuador immediately after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck in April 2016, and saw how Médecins Sans Frontières teams had travelled to to the disaster zones and were providing mental health support, high quality primary healthcare and distributing relief items. It made an immense difference to many traumatised and displaced people. That’s just one relatively small example amongst a myriad of great deeds by this fantastic organisation around the globe.

    The Raffle

To take part, please post in this thread and donate* £5 per entry to https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Som.../MedicalHeroes

Feel free to take part multiple times and if you are not interested in the prizes, you are welcome to donate anyway!

Please include your TZ-UK user name in the comments if it's not obvious.

As usual, I’ll maintain a list of the participants here and will let this run for a fortnight. Laura will personally draw the winners on Sunday 20 May when she returns to the UK for her next check-up.

    Prize Details

Speedbird III PRS-22 purchased by me through this forum in July 2015 and worn around a dozen times since. One of my favourites from the Timefactor’s stable, with the well balanced 39mm diameter, supremely legible dial and handset, and top grade ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. The bracelet with the neat centre clasp is superb.

This is a 2010 watch in very good condition. There are a few minor scuffs to the case but nothing that you notice in daily wear. The dial, hands and crystal are perfect. It includes the full length bracelet, currently sized for about a 6.75” wrist.

I set it accurately yesterday morning, wore it for much of the day and rested it on its side overnight. This morning it is running at -8s, well within spec.

It comes with original case which is slightly timeworn but perfectly serviceable, guarantee card and cloth however the instruction leaflet is missing. I'll cover postage to anywhere in the world.

dkpw has donated a brand new super stealthy Casio G-Shock DW-6900MS-1DR:

The original strap is unused and still has the buckle wrapped up. There's also all of the original packaging. It's the 3230 module which means the calendar runs to 2099. It comes with the usual G-Shock modes, time-keeping, alarm, timer and stopwatch, with the hourly chime and flash alert.

    Ar.parask has donated a Seiko 6138 'Kakume':

A bit of 70’s Seiko loveliness, currently with a few non-original parts fitted but perfectly wearable regardless. With a little bit of investment this would turn into a beautiful example. Although fitted with a replacement dial and hand set the dial and (incorrect) hands the watch came with are included. It is not known whether the original supplied dial is aftermarket or not. It comes with a Seiko bracelet and the case is still very sharp.

SteveHarris has donated an Orient - 1980's Multi Year Calendar:

This is quirky, unusual and interesting, so right up my street. Known as the 'College' model it features an automatic 21 jewels calibre Y469672–4A movement. It has the original bracelet. Dimensions without crown 40x45 mm, thickness 11 mm. It is running very nicely, having been serviced and cleaned by the previous owner. The overall condition of the watch is very good.

timeanddate.com lists years that have identical calendars (or simply subtract 28 years from the current one), so you can set this for 1990 and it will be correct for 2018, 1985/1991 for 2019, etc. https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/repeating.html

Crazytrain has kindly added a brand new copy of The Watchmaker's Apprentice: Collector's Edition on DVD: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074JS68..._n.B7AbTYFNEB8

Last, and most definitely least, is another watch from my own collection. A Vostok Amphibia 420526 AKA 'Zissou' immortalised by Bill Murray in ‘The Life Aquatic’. This was purchased new by me from Meranom in 2016 and I’ve worn it about four times. If it’s not to the winners taste then it would be a great base for modding practice with the easily swappable parts. It comes with everything that you see here, which isn’t much TBH.

Our sincere thanks to Aris, David, Steve, Calvin and Doug and of course to Eddie for making this possible in the first place.

    Matthew and family

I'll update the list below as often as I can, roughly in the order that posts and donations appear. I have a busy travel schedule with limited connectivity during the next few days, so apologies if it sometimes takes a while. The list will not become final until just before the draw.

First off the mark, and you win one of Bill's Mystery Prizes.

There are two further numbers already chosen by Laura with mystery spot prizes hiding behind them. Good luck!

I'll be in touch after the draw date for an address.

Many thanks, John. It's taking a little while to come through as can be the case with VMG, if you let me know how many you are in for I'll slot you into the list.

I'd like to donate this Seiko 6309. It was the subject of the Refurbishment tutorial I did back in march, so it's in pretty much as new order.

    All working fine.

Wow, thanks Doug! I'm certainly not going to refuse, that would be a fabulous addition.

I'll add it to the prize list and I'm sure it will add a further incentive for members of this great community to dig deep.

    All the best, Matthew

Many thanks indeed for the support so far. I've updated the list ahead of travelling for much of the rest of the day.

I'm aware that occasionally members have experienced difficulties making transfers to the Virgin Money Giving page, particularly internationally or on mobile devices. Please avoid paying twice - wait to see if you receive an e-mail to confirm that it has gone through.

There's plenty of time and I'm more than happy to assist anyone having problems by using my PayPal account and donating on your behalf.

For those of you who have a bank holiday today, I hope that it is a splendid one.

    Cheers,

    Matthew

Hi Matthew. Great that you've organised this, and for wonderful causes. Having discovered today that my unborn grandchild has a hole in the heart, support for GOSH seems particularly poignant.

I'm in for 4 entries please and I've donated.

Thanks, Simon. That's tough news, I'm sure that your grandchild will be in very good hands. I have nothing but respect for the dedication of those that work with children who have serious medical conditions.

We're very touched by the fantastic support for this already (although launching half-way through a scorching bank holiday weekend was possibly not my smartest decision )

Heading off to the airport again shortly, no data roaming here so I'll update the list before heading off.

    Thanks again,

    Matthew

By the way, these are just bonuses, the number still goes into the draw. I'll be in touch after the closing date for an address.

    Cheers!

I packaged up the Speedbird and Vostok over the weekend, ready for their trip to the UK on Thursday.

Just under a week to run, these are both very worthy causes

Many thanks. I’m never sure of the best way to promote these so that everybody who might wish to participate or simply support the causes gets a chance to see it. It’s one of the reasons that I let them run for a fortnight.
