    Economy tips for tightwads

I enjoy saving a few (measly) quid here and there so I can spend the savings on watches, guns and ammo and other toys.

The driver wiper on my wife's Captur was making horrible rubbing grinding noises so needed replacing. I bought one from the local Motorsave but it proved impossible to fit as the clips were incompatible. They kindly refunded me the £17.99. However on examining the old wiper blade it was apparent it could be reversed by removing the clip and putting it back upside down. It works great, nice and quiet now.

I've been looking for a cover to protect the seat on my Pug 208. Town and Country seat covers were recommended and I found a local shop selling them at £26.99 for a single drivers. They let me try it but it was fiddly and difficult to fit and looked crap. I tried a Streetwize version at £12.99 and it fit and looked better while at least appearing to be made of the same material. Excellent.

Anyone else got any money saving tips or are you all too minted to care?

Small dabs of dried toothpaste on a plate make excellent after-dinner mints.

Whenever I boil an egg I don't bother with those costly egg timers, once boiling I jump in the car and drive 60mph for 3 minutes. I then ring the wife and tell her to take it off the boil.

Get free parking in any city centre - just smash your windows, pull out the radio and put a 'Police Aware' sticker on the windscreen.

I was paying a loan off early years ago, when i phoned to pay they told me there was an early repayment charge! Sure it was 5% of the final balance I called back the day after and payed just leaving a £1 balance. Soon as the payment went through i asked the girl can i make another payment please for the final balance.. There was £13,000.00 balance so saved a few quid. 5p instead of £650 made my day.

    I did that - bought a Peugeot 406.

Great car - did nearly 250k miles before I sold it on for £70.

Only snag, parking once on the 20 minute spot outside the train station, a rather confused woman got in the back of the car. And I was too embarrassed to pretend I was a cab driver.

(Those beaded seat covers were a waste really.)

Save money by washing your car once every 2 years and avoiding detailers. The 2 year car wash rule soon saves you enough to buy a decent watch.

Apparently you can go to the golden arches buy a Big Mac meal and the receipt invites you to fill in a questionnaire, do that an you get a code for another Big Mac and fries for £1.99, the receipt for that will allow you to do this again, and again, and again.

It is possible to make a perfectly serviceable wallet out of duct tape (brought to you by my colleague Colin).

    Hello

Why pay for Sky / Virgin Media when you can watch your neighbours tv for free from a convenient vantage point. Notwithstanding the restraining order / large dog / curtains etc.

Save money on Brillo pads by putting drops of fairy liquid on weetabix.

Save wear and tear on hinges, buy only opening your doors a couple of inches and squeezing through sideways.

Both courtesy of Viz circa 1988.

I read yesterday on HUKD to scan your Nectar card at self-service tills before your shop at Sainsburys and hit pay (which will be £0-00) and the machine will print all money-off vouchers rather than receive after your shop which are then easily forgotten or expire before the next shopping trip. Or you could buy a small item eg 5p carrier bag to avoid looking suspicious. I am yet to try this however.

Genuinely made me LOL, reminded me of when I was a kid and my mate bought an 'All for one' remote control, we then proceeded to go around the local village changing peoples channels and turning their volume up.

Bull Dog Moisturiser great stuff but barely lasts a month. I cut the tube in half and fish out enough from the exposed carcass to last another week!

Save money by not paying the 5p for the carrier bag. I never have at the self service.

I’m planning a money saving drive next year.

I’ve found a place that provides three square meals a day, a roof over your head and even a little bit of exercise.

Just need to do something to get myself arrested now...

Fly everywhere Business Class and you will save a fortune in toiletries, pens, tissues, eye masks, ear plugs and crap socks. The little in-flight bags make great 'pencil case' Christmas gifts for the kids to boot.

Buy one of those new realistic sex dolls it will save you money in the long run. No dating, no expensive wedding, no marriage, no arguing and no kids. You also don't have to wait a few dates to get any...

Cleaning up afterwards may be a bit of a hassle though.

No, because the whole point of driving for 3miles at 60mph is to time 3mins. If you can time 3mins you don’t need to drive anywhere...

There is an old Viz Top Tip about giving your clothes to charity, then buying them back once they are washed and ironed. My uncle did this for years.
He also bought plastic plates, knives and forks instead of a dishwasher.

I don't think he saved any money but he's had an easy life!

Don't waste money on an address book. When you receive your new telephone directory, save the old one and cross out the names & addresses of the people you don't know.

And apparently the 'code' is utterly meaningless. It doesn't have any function, so just fill in any random digits and save time and the electricity you would waste on the questionnaire.

I used to work with the worlds worst tight wad. His tip was to buy Christmas gifts & cards somewhere like M&S, those lines which as obviously seasonal, keep the receipt, buy them again in January for less than half price and then get a refund for the original full amount.

Isn't this the same as just buying them in January?
