    GAP Insurance Recommendations

Looking for recommendations for GAP Insurance.

Have found ALA Gap Insurance on MoneySavingsExpert.

ALA are who I use on my cars tbh. I thankfully;y haven't had to claim, but in terms of they way they conduct themselves and always answer promptly, I can't imagine they're anything but a great company.

Tehy also offer discounts via Pistonheads etc so mention that when you call them to see if they can give you a deal.

You could do worse than check out www.GAPinsurance.co.uk

Almost identical policies to ALA... e.g. same underwriter, same claim administrator and... save for the fact that ALA will charge you a cancellation fee if you cancel mid-term and take a pro-rata refund of unused premium whilst GAPinsurance.co.uk don't charge cancellation fees at all, almost identical wordings.

Plus... in many cases, GAPinsurance.co.uk are cheaper than ALA without the need for promotional codes but, promotional codes are around for GAPinsurance.co.uk too.

    :-)

Yet another vote for ALA. No experience with claims thankfully but their customer service is excellent. For my current car I bought a policy online and later had to phone them for something (that I can't remember). Quick response and very friendly. The lady I spoke to noticed that I had bought a higher level of cover than normal for the car/model, suggested I move one or two notches down and refunded me the difference! When I sounded very surprised she explained that they didn't get any commissions for selling higher cover levels so are able to advise customers in their best interests (or something along those lines).

    Another vote for ALA.

Bought a 3 or 4 year policy when I purchased a new BMW and when I changed to a Mini a few years later, they transferred the policy over for free.

I always use ALA although never had to claim. Use the code PISTON12 for a 12% discount

Another one with ALA, cheaper with far better comprehensive cover than what the main dealer was offering. Never had to claim mind you.

Waste of money in my view - paid for it twice, never again.

My daughter’s boyfriend bought a Citroen C1 for £6k. Just before he’d had it three years he wrote the car off.

His insurance paid out £3k (£2k to the finance company, £500 to him and £500 excess) whilst the gap insurance paid him the other £3k plus £250 of his excess.

He therefore had £3750 with which to buy another car rather than the £500 he’d have had without it.

Whilst I agree that for most people it won’t be called upon (like most insurance), for some it can mean the difference between a car or no car!

That's insurance for you, however if you'd bought it from a motor dealer at the incredibly high prices they charge for the same, I'd almost agree with you.

Consider however that online providers such as ourselves can be up to 85% cheaper than a motor dealer would charge you for the same *and* the policies available from specialist brokers such as us, our normally superior to that of a motor dealer's policy too, the cost of GAP insurance can therefore be relatively small pocket change over the course of the policy duration in comparison to other expenses you'd incur for running the vehicle.

For example at present, our average individual GAP insurance policy premium is £196.66 and the average policy duration is 3.44 years (based on an average vehicle value of circa £29,000)... broken down, this equates to a monthly equivalent of circa just £4.76.

By comparison, a little earlier today a colleague spoke to someone who'd been quoted £12 per month (to be added to their finance) by their motor dealer over 48 months on a £9,000 vehicle - a total of £576!

Back to your point though... if you'd have needed to use it, you're opinion would likely be quite the opposite.

I've never cancelled but I have switched cars mid-policy, and they simply transfer the policy to the next one pro rata. An impressive set of people to deal with and very cheap for my type of car.

Likewise. I’ve swapped policies a few times with them and found them really easy to deal with. The overall cost for the peace of mind is worth it I reckon. Tell them you read about them on the Baby BMW site and they could well give you an extra 10% off.

Sorry... my mistake. I thought I’d made this clear in a previous thread that I was involved in about GAP Insurance: http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...-Gap-Insurance - I initially withheld that fact from the thread I’ve linked to as I thought it would breach forum rules... but I’ve just checked and it seems I didn’t re-visit the matter after it being suggested by another member that there were no such rules to break.

If the rules have changed since, I apologise.

But yes, to be clear, I’m connected to GAPinsurance.co.uk - I own it... and have been plying my trade since I started the UK’s very first specialist online GAP Insurance provider back in early 2004. Something that a whole range of companies have attempted to emulate since.
