I'll soon be off out looking for St George mushrooms,

Always amazes me that most people don't know when St George's day is, but when Paddy's day comes around they are right in the mood for a celebration, even if they have no Irish connections or indeed have ever been there.

Slaying a few dragons is always a good plan

It is a shame, it would be nice that it is something to look forward to.

Surely these days should be a Bank Holiday

I don't know why it's celebrated at all. I'd be in favour of scrapping St. George's Day for something like Churchill's Day, throw in a national bank holiday and we'd be celebrating like the Irish.

I always look forward to St. George's day.

Pop down the pub, meet some (not all) the racist homophobes nationalists being oh so 'english' then point out St. George was a gay Turk. And that the 'true' english (through various invasions, but mainly the Romans) are actually the Welsh

Oh what fun we had on the way to A&E

And don’t forget that St George is also claimed by the Spanish, well Catalonians, a big celebration today in Barcelona.

They certainly do a lot more celebrating than we do in the UK!

Happy St George’s day one and all... Well worth the recognition, regardless whether he was Turk, gay or otherwise (surely this is not new news?)

You do not need to be be a racist thug / homophobe to be patriotic or proud of our green and pleasant land

I’m quite partial to our little island and would be mortified as being identified as anything other than a hard working, inclusive individual, married to an Irish girl who also enjoys a Guineas on St Patrick’s day but also thinks St George’s day is a great opportunity to celebrate all that is good about England.

I was once told St George was actually a Turk who never came to Britain.

I don't think it really matters who/what George was.
What is important to me is to have a day (preferably a public holiday) when the English can celebrate being English, much as many other nationalities do.
