Patek Aquanaut 5167a - Views and opinions please.

    Evening all

I have the chance to purchase a brand new Aquanaut on the rubber strap and likely to buy next week. Therefore, I would be grateful for your views and experiences of this watch.

Also, although I am not buying the watch for investment purposes. I would want to liquidate it if needs must or I don't get on with it. As such, is there any likelihood that pre-owned prices may drop significantly?

    Regards

Nice watch, but I sold mine within two months for a 5711. Not a real “event” watch.
With regard to resale, go by instinct and your user name.

Lol Skyman - What do you mean by "not a real 'event' watch"?

    Thanks

I absolutely love it, its my favourite patek.
IMO its more modern than the nautilus, the rubber strap is extremely comfortable and i prefer the fume dial.
I can't see prices dropping any time soon.

It is ok on the wrist, but some would say, me included, a bit lightweight. The rubber is a tad narrow and not tapered. Nice, but not special.

Thanks Verv - Bizarre as it may sound, can I ask what car you drive. That's to other 'Aquanaut' owners past and present, also. I have my reasons for asking!

I bought mine back in 2013 and it was almost seen as the poor mans Nautilus, not that there's much difference in price. I love the Aquanaut and as has been said above is a very modern looking watch. I find it wears well both casual and smart. It's true that at first glance it's a little understated, particularly compared to the Nautilus but when you catch the Aquanaut dial in the right light it really pops!

I own a Nautilus and have an aquanaut on order.

Cars, I have an old A4 estate tdi, a new golf gttdi and an old Boxster S, but prefer to ride motorbike. I don't think the type of car makes any difference. I'd be happy auth any of them, or without them and something completely different.

I think there is a good chance the watch will hold its value well, and there is quite a long waiting list at present.
It's just a matter of time...

Hi - I'm drawn to the design of the 5167a, which is also reflected in the cars I like/desire and was just looking to find some correlation, if any exists at all.

It's my favourite Patek by far, and I borrow my mum's Nissan Micra (K12, an absolutely brilliant car) when I need it. If you ever arrive at a correlation, or any other meaningful conclusion for that matter, I'd be interested to know.

Of course - IMO both are design classics. In fact if I do pull the trigger on the 5167a I will most likely be driving a K12 for a while.

I think RR have excelled with the Velar. The design correlation continues!

I think of my Aquanaut in the same way as the F P Journe Chrono Bleu. Entry level but far exceeds this in terms of style, versatility, accessibility.

It’s a great car but nothing special just an old A3. But it’s brought both my kids home from hospital after they came into the world so it has sentimental value.

    Stunning M8,

Do the handles come out automatically and do you think these will have a negative impact on RRS values?

I’m down for the 5164 GMT version. More balanced and more presence than the 5167, and I just can’t stand the white date window on the 5167. But, at least you’ll not lose money if you decide to move it on.

I was all for the 5164 until I tried it on. For me the elegance was lost with those ‘lumps’ and even though I’ve got 7.5 inch wrists it just didn’t work. I have to say I was disappointed as I’d built it up so much in my mind & dismissed the 5167. Even though it’s bigger I kind of like the new 5968A though.

I like the simplicity and legibility of the 5167a, which is only affordable as I will be selling a couple of watches. The 5164 is nice but is completely unaffordable for me.

I think it needs to be optioned correctly - colour & wheels make much more of a difference here than in many other vehicles.

I think the finishing is superb, and the dial is especially nice. Also something about the very long thin white second hand that I like. No hacking movement, but you are able to adjust the second hand by winding gently backwards. It is light on the wrist, but doesn’t feel fragile. Also fits very nicely under the cuff.

Not worn for a while, but this is mine

Almost bought an Aquanaut travel time in Vegas this year, but glad I didn’t as the 5968a is a much more interesting piece.

Yeah, this is a super nice release. I just hope Patek don't start exploiting the design like they've done with the Nautilus with the complications, none of which work remotely as well as the original (it's not RO-bad, but I really feel it's unnecessary). The 5968 came out great, and I'm happy about that, but they should leave it at that because most of their recent releases look like pure design guesswork.

Mrs cmcm3 loved the rose gold ladies' pilot and I got a chance to try on my grail, the 5170p. Should've taken pics of those two... 😕

They have done a much better job with the Nautilus PC than with the 5140 but still the fonts look a little large.

Yeah, it's brilliant. It has a similar effect to the platinum Daytona which is that when you pick it up it is almost comedy-heavy compared to the steel, but in a really lovely way.

I realise that complication Nautiluses have their fans, and the 5170 is obviously nice, though stylistically perhaps a bit unambitious (I'd like to see them do today what they did with the Nautilus and the Aquanaut in the 70s and 90s), but I can't shake the feeling that while decades ago, all Pateks, or at least the ones I've seen, were absolute classics, they have recently begun to guess, looking to release new watches and seeing what they can come up to be able to do so. It's possible that it happens more than I might think, even with top-shelf brands like Patek, but when it starts to show, or when plebeians like myself begin even to suspect it, something isn't right.

Yes, 5270p, you're quite right. Also tried the 5170p but didn't get a pic.
