Is this vintage Rolex a fake?

A friend of mine has this a few years and showed it to me today. I thought it was genuine at first, but another lad said it may be a fake. The expertise on here should know!IMG_20180420_112858.jpg

You need to whip the back off and take a look at the movement and case (for starters). The dial doesn't look like any Rolex I have seen before, however that doesn't mean that it's not correct or that that its not been repainted.

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

I will. The guy will be devastated if it's a fake. Wearing it as his pride and joy for 10 years. I hope it's genuine.

I think it may be genuine - you do see 1940s Rolexes with that style of Roman and marker dial.

Here's one similar, (described as a refinished dial, but close to yours): http://www.vintagegoldwatches.com/pr...ink-gold-r414/ and here's one that is also similar in overall design: https://www.vintagewinders.co.uk/pro...e-watch-vw561/

The dial gives me an uneasy feeling. It may well be a genuine Rolex (Precision?) with a refinished dial but you'd need an opinion from somebody who knows more about these - perhaps Mike Woods? If it's a redial you may pick up a replacement dial from somewhere like the Vintage Rolex Market but may require a bit of patience.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.
