Any vets here? Dog conjunctivitis question.

    Hello,

My small dog (8kg) has got a yellow discharge from his eye.

Can I use “human” chloramphenicol drops safely?

He’s always got weepy runny eyes but this is the first time it’s ever been gloopy yellow.

    Thanks!

Friend has a British bull dog, it's had something done to its eyes which means it has to have drops in every morning for the rest of its life! He was telling me they are charging him £25 a pop for these drops once a month plus whatever to see the dog, I casually said have you searched the net for them as a lot of stuff vets use like that is for humans as well.

He went home and looked found a bottle of the drops twice the price for £3! He had been buying them drops for 2 years.

So probably yes but what do know. I only deal with animals that aren't breathing anymore.

I've used drops from the pharmacy for my cats before. Same 0.5%w/v as those from the vet I'm pretty sure. Bear in mind chloramphenicol is a pharmacy medicine so you'd have to say why you wanted it....

Would perhaps be worth getting a vet to have a look. Eyes aren't something to take a chance with tbh.

The answer from one of the best vets in the country, a good friend of mine is ; Yes you can use the human chloramphenicol drops safely (UNLESS the dog is allergic to chloramphenicol).

As an ex-vet, I would fully endorse this statement

Question is, does it work the other way. Which medications are expensive for humans but cheap for animals and otherwise interchangeable?

Unless you're so skint that you can't afford a visit to the vets I can't for the life of me see why you wouldn't go.
