We have a water meter installed outside under a metal flap on the footpath, it's the first time today I've seen anyone take a reading, a bloke with a high viz jacket knelt down and some sort of hand held meter took a reading, he wrote on a pad and continued down the road.
I normally take a reading every few months, but that involves lifting the flap, removing the dirt cover, cleaning the display window, shining a torch to see the figures, reversing the procedure.
It would be good if I could pick up the signal and reading without any of the above.
I've googled it but nothing coming up. Is it wireless, and could a laptop maybe pick up the signal to read myself?
Coz I'd just got up and was looking out the bedroom window. He must have been an early riser.
Did ours yesterday with the meter reader, I did it myself as we have slow worms living in the hole and I don't want them hurt.
if you can't get your hands dirty for a 30 second job, seems a bit sad.

Given the meter has no power it must be some sort of RFID scanner that powers up the meter to read it I expect.

I suppose I should have just rang the water supplier up.
South Staffs told there is nothing presently that the customer can use to remotely read the meter.
The meter readers have a radio scanner that once they input the meter serial number into gives them the meter reading.
Oh well hopefully in the near future.
Just moved into a new property and i am not crawling around reading either the gas or water meters the electric is easy so no issues there for what we all pay these companies let them do their job and hopefully keep someone in a job.
I do agree, but when they don't read the meter just before producing the bills they have a wild guess and have always way over estimated and I've had to ring them up.
That's why I do like to keep an eye on the readings.
Pity mine is in such an awful place to easily get at, some of my family got them in the kitchen cupboard.
Has anyone ever checked that their water meter is reading accurately? Most people assume that they are accurate, but are they?
