    Goodbye Gunny.

Sad to hear R Lee Ermey - Gunny from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket has moved onto the next drill square.

    RIP

“I bet you're the kind of guy that would f**k a person in the ass and not even have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach-around.”

One of the funniest lines ever in a serious movie. (And supposedly improvised by Ermey).

Great guy, his gun shows were funny to watch, when he was shooting he would ram a couple of 9mm casings in his ears as plugs!!!

Sad to hear that, FMJ is one of my favourite films and (apparently) he improvised a lot of his lines.

Was also Sarge in the plastic green Toy Story soldiers.

His FMJ role surely gave one of the greatest tirades in movie history.

I stumbled across Full Metal Jacket whilst flicking TV channels last month. Have it on DVD and seen it many times, but despite the lateness of the hour I watched again until the end of the Boot Camp section, because Ermey's performance is astonishing, nothing less than a full throttle tour de force, you can't take your eyes off him.

As mentioned above, if a notorious perfectionist like Stanley Kubrick - not unknown to demand 50+ takes of a scene - allows you to freewheel and do your own improvisational thing, then you must have something a bit special.

He certainly became a renowned figure in popular culture of the time.
He wasn't acting, he played himself, proper hardass. RIP

Perfect casting for FMJ given he was a training instructor in the US Marine Corp.

Tonight, you pukes will sleep with your rifles. You will give your rifle a girl's name because this is the only pussy you people are going to get. Your days of finger-banging ol' Mary-Jane Rottencrotch through her pretty pink panties are over! You're married to this piece. This weapon of iron and wood. And you will be faithful. Port, hut!

Little known fact he was also in Apocalypse Now.

    RIP
