Thread: Larger, luxurious cars!

    Larger, luxurious cars!

There have been some lovely cars for sale on here over the last few years. I bought my current car, a Honda Accord 3.0 V6, from Nigel (our friend who sold a couple of CL500s recently). It has been brilliant. However, I'm doing a bit more driving at the moment with my daughter as she progresses through her competitive swimming programmes and time is spent in the car going to and from training and the odd gala etc.

So, I think about changing the car and going for something a bit larger and more luxurious. Given that I've had two LS400s in the past, I was thinking about a Lexus LS460 or 600 perhaps, but my friend has a S350 and loves the Mercedes brand. Budget wise, I'd be looking around £10 - 12k so, realistically, I reckon the car will be at least 10 years old. That doesn't bother me providing it has a good history and is good condition. I'm not a great fan of the BMW brand (so would probably rule out the 7 series) and Audi has never really done it for me either.

What obvious options am I missing?

I’ve had top of the range Merc’s, Audi’s and BMW’s but for me the XJR’s was the most overall ‘luxurious’ saloon experience of them all, particularly the ride.

There's a nice Maser QP for sale on the forum for £13 before negotiation
    http://www.sportsmaserati.com/showth...r-%C2%A312-950
that's about as cheap as half decent one is btu yes the running costs are going to be high.
    At £10k I'd buy a CL500 maybe like this

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...had=New&page=1

or a CLS if you needed 4 doors or seats
    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...us=1500&page=1

i've had a great time with our e55 so am very much merc orientated in this sector.

Have you asked Nigel what he has in stock?

If you're after the luxury without being badge conscious, you could get a seriously nice Skoda Superb for £12k.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! It has given me loads to think about. I love the look of the CLS listed above. That looks superb. Anyone had direct experience with them? I think I'll need 4 doors and hopefully a reasonable sized boot. But luxury for around £10k is the way forward for the driver and passenger!

It would be the £535 a year VED that would ruin the CLS for me, though it does look lovely

I had one for 3 years, good car, I even got on with Command that some can’t do. It was the 320cdi that I had but go for the 350 run out model if you can’t stretch to the new model. I only got shut as it had a sticking turbo which was mega bucks to fix. Check parking sensors on rear bumper too as they fail due to water ingress. Tyres are a few quid as they’re big but it’s a lot of car for no money.

Big, luxurious, budget-priced cars are great - but don't forget they cost at least as much to run, or considerably more, than a NEW big, luxurious, full-priced car. Budget accordingly and pray nothing goes wrong. (Don't ask how I know this! lol )

7 series 3.0 BMW or S Class Merc.

Message received and understood! I've been there too. That said, with a careful choice and a trusted mechanic I've generally had good experiences with older cars.

Another vote for Jag, a top spec XF 3.0 diesel is sure to please. Only failing is the poor sat nav, I rarely use sat nav but when I do I struggle with mine. Other than that everything’s fine, although fuel consumption on short runs is poor.

Just been driving sonething else for a few days and it felt good to get back in my Jag. Plenty of them around, shouldn’t be difficult to find a good one for £12k.

I guess I’ve just been lucky with the 2 I’ve had.

Interesting that’s it’s “beaten” by other makers that are mentioned on this tethered and yet they don’t ge singled out for specific criticsm.

Got any more axes to grind at all?

That is interesting considering I'm litigating with my BMW dealer regarding a car they cannot fix.

No mention yet of the Lexus LS?

But I would offer a motor trader mate's advice: If you couldn't afford it to buy it new, you can't afford to run it used.

I've got two offers for a Lexus LS600 and can hopefully view one this week. I note Lexus doesn't appear on the chart. They must be either so good or so bad not to register!

Whilst on the topic of Range Rovers and derivatives etc, I'm not sure I could ever buy a car designed like this:

    image ru

My OCD kicks in far too much! Although I notice that so many others have found this perturbing that a company is offering to 'fix' the design fault for you:

Funny you mention this, we saw one the other day and my wife (who has zero interest in cars) actually pointed it out saying the position of the number plate was just odd. I think OCD is the correct word for this. Still someone must be okay with it.

I'm not sure. I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the design meeting where thus decision was made! Just looks wrong to me.

Got one of those and I had it for 10 years from new. Apart from routine maintenance it has cost me pennies.

Why anyone buys a beemer is beyond me, given unreliability and the fact they are as ubiquitous now as the Ford Mondeo is of the 1980s.

I’ve only ever seen one other Glacier Blue V70 R-Design on the road like mine!

Ultimate driving machine, my arse. Same goes for Audi.

Not sure you have considered leasing but there were some great deals on the Volvo S90. Currently to be had for under £320 PM all in.

You just have to get the alloys re-finished as all LS's seem to suffer from bubbling on the alloy coating within a couple of years. Strange but most Japanese cars are super reliable but have the same issue with alloys

True, the Lexus dealer used to refer them under warranty at service, they said Lexus can't do wheels.
