Indeed, a real shame it worked out as it has. Selfless above and beyond.

+1 I was sad to see this morning that he did not survive - truly a very brave officer. I hope his family can take some comfort from that..

In this day and age hero is an overused and oft misplaced word. Lt Col. Beltram is however truly worthy of the title. What a brave and selfless officer.

I'm in France so let me add some info about him. 45 years old, decorated in Iraq, formerly, amongst other things, 4 years as commander of the Gendarmerie company in charge of protecting the presidential palace, the Elysée in Paris, as part of the National Guard. Ordre de la Mérite Nationale. He was in the midst of preparing his mariage for the Catholic church (he was already civilly married recently, to a veterinary doctor). The religious marriage was supposed to take place in June. The priest who was to marry him, a good friend, arrived running in the middle of the night in the Carcassonne hospital to give him the last sacraments - and gave the couple their marriage sacraments just before the colonel died. Talk about an exceptional story.
Beltram was truly one of the good guys. Described by the people who knew him as 'un bon mec'.

Brave and selfless beyond belief. I'm sure he will receive the highest of French honours.

A great loss and very sad.

To offer your life to save another one is the supreme act of selflessness.

    What the others have said.

Added to that: when stepping forward, he put his phone ‘on’ so that his collegues were able to hear and follow everything inside the building. Not only a true hero but also a man who kept his mind together in the midst of the battle, the chaos and -what must have been- the battle inside his head: ‘...do I step forward or not...’

Fwiw: he should be remembered with a statue!

    Thank you for that.

Heros come in many shapes and forms and it's easy for the term to be diluted. Not a chance of that in this case, it was a truly selfless act.

Hero. Totally selfless act of heroism. The call of duty and what it makes you do to protect life. He deserves the highest of honours.

Very sad for his family and friends, but he will be remembered as a true hero. RIP

I hope his family can take a crumb of comfort from the fact he died protecting the innocent. The word hero is banded about but it applies here. Selfless act - incredibly humbling - and very sad.

BTW, I made a mistake, I wrote his last name as mentioned by the OP. It is actually Beltrame, with an 'e' at the end. So I stand corrected.
It does make you reflect on the habit of dealing out medals like the Legion d'Honneur to people (or make them lords) who have not saved or helped others at the risk of their own lives but who were simply very successful and got very rich.
Just looked at the video of that Florida teenager, Emma, on stage in Washington during the protest rally against firearms. That's also one of the 'good people'. Impressive. We need more col. Beltrames and more Emmas.

On the Le Figaro website there's a suggestion for a State Funeral; "When Johnny (Hallyday) is granted a State Funeral, then this hero certainly deserves one as well!" According to people on the street in France.

Absolutely... Just read about some of his previous deeds too. He is the definition of a HERO.

    Oxford dictionary definition.
A person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

    A “born again” devout Catholic, John 15:13 seems very appropriate;

“Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends”

    Rest in peace.
