<<<< Diver on Leather - can it ever be right? >>>>

I've always been anti the leather on a diver look. I don't think they ever look right and, although I never go diving, I do use it to swim and leather isn't up the task obviously.

    However....

I've recently noticed a few pics on t'internet of Seiko 6309-7040s and the Turtle re-issues on leather straps and actually thought some of them looked pretty good.

Whilst perusing sales corner the other day I spotted a few leathers being sold by my favourite strap maker (Pavel) and hey, it would have been rude not to!

It arrived this morning and I'm reviewing my whole belief system! I think it looks rather good. It's the Seiko SRP777J on a dark brown horween chromexcel leather. The strap is, as expected, beautifully made and butter soft straight out the packet.

I fully expect this to divide opinion so would love to know what you think:

Well, leather looks great - though I'm not keen on your Brown Strap/Black watch combo - it's just the conceptual silliness of having a Diver's watch that you are afraid to take in the water 'cos the strap isn't waterproof! Though of course, some leather straps claim to be water-resistant, but I'm not over convinced of their long term durability.

Of course it can. Here is my CWC 1980 RN Reissue Diver fitted with the special edition leather strap especially commissioned for the watch to fit over the fixed bars.

And here is the CWC listing from their website.

A lot of divers look great on ‘vintage’ leather straps. My MM300 has a Colareb Roma on most of the time.

I have an Ocean Rover on a Colared Siena Tan strap and it looks fantastic - having the 'aged' lume helps a lot.

    Sorry, no pics!

You only have to look at how many Panerai watches are on leather to recognise that divers on leather can certainly be fine.

However it has to be the right leather - GavBaz’s Seiko in this thread looks fantastic, but I’m sorry klunk, personally I couldn’t live with a blue dial, a Pepsi bezel and a tan strap...

What if they have fixed bars that were specifically intended for NATO straps, for example the CWC range of divers and any military diver.

We’ve done this several times before. Loads of dive watches look great on leather and most of them never get used for diving so what does it matter that leather is not the best material for submarine activity?

Well said that man, I won't even wash the dishes in my 300 meter rated diver.

Actually NATO's are totally fine but I stand my dislike of leather on divers!

I did say opinion would be divided!

    Looks good on the leather.

Personally with a smooth grain strap like the one in your photo I’d probably go with a black strap on that watch.

If keeping the brown strap colour, I’d look for a strap with a buffalo or alligator grain.

Normally not keen but I think this diver works well on leather:

Leather on dive watch works for me, except when I go diving!

I have worn my Sub and Seiko SRP637 on leather. Nothing wrong, though I still prefer them on bracelets eventually.

I'll wear mine on what the hell I want and couldn't give a rats ass what anyone else thinks!

Jesus Jon, take a chill pill

But seriously I don't stand by the notion that a particular watch should only have a particular material strap, unless of course you are using it for it's intended purpose, which about 0.0000001.573% of us do.

Just enjoy your watch as you wish.

<<<< Diver on Leather - can it ever be right? >>>>

My Anonimo comes on Kodiak leather, prepped to dive in. Still seems like a hassle as you need to rinse after which would be easier with rubber, bracelet or even NATO. I do like how it looks though.

There are many who will tell you that they all need to be rinsed after. ;-)

My favourite leather strap to go diving with is the Di-Modell Chronissimo, very comfortable, supple and has proven to be hard-waring.

    Very resistant to sweat too.

down to individual choice surely.i sometimes wear my SMP on leather in the summer due to the absurd lack of micro adjustment on the bracelet.leather looks ok on some divers but my only wet watch is a 6309-7040 which i have had pressure tested, i wear on shark mesh..

Ofcourse. My point was more that leather doesn’t rinse easy as it absorbs water.

The Hirsch Performance range are the answer, all the lovely looks while properly water resistant to not have to worry getting your dive watch wet.

Nope, not a fan at all of leather on divers. I don't like non-tapering straps either. On the plus side I like the colour and leather on the OP's strap!

It's nowhere near as bad though as wearing a Tropic on an Autavia

+1 for the Anonimo on a Kodiak strap....

I find most divers do not look ideal on leather, but wouldn't wear this on anything else. IMG_20180322_093237.jpg

I think vintage divers on leather are OK, reflecting their status as ex-divers, ie probably not water resistant enough for swimming. Otherwise, no.

Yeah course it can. Panerai were worn on leather by divers.
Besides, it's quite freeing to do what YOU want rather than what the collective prefers.

Not sure if it counts as leather but, IMO, most divers look good on shark skin. The Di-Modell shark (black) was my preferred strap for the vintage SM300 when I had it.

Correct on both counts Celia. I wasn’t looking for validation, just opinions. I’ve been wearing it today and love it.

Have to agree, its a very comfortable strap.

  45. #45
Sure, why not. If it looks good, it works.

For me, something like the Tudor Black Bay Red looks better on leather than it does bracelet.

As to usage - most dive watches don't get immersed in water, and even at that, a decent Di-Modell waterproof leather would do the job.

It's pointless to be proscriptive about such matters.

  46. #46

JLC divers come on leather with a small rubber insert. I think they look good but prefer the rubber strap for a diver in all honesty. That said the Blancpain sailcloth strap looks great too but both work better with clothe than trunks or a wetsuit when I think rubber strap looks the best.
