    Stephen Hawking

    Genius, R I P.

He once wrote that he had motor neurone disease for practically all his adult life but said that it had not stopped him having an attractive family and being successful in his work.
"It shows," he said, "that one need not lose hope."

The greatest and most inspirational theoretical physicist since Feynman for my money. He lived an astonishing and fulfilled life against the odds and his legacy will live on for many, many years.

True! I was thinking that in years to come people will put him on the list with other great names like Galilei and Copernicus.

Mr Hawking said that theoretical Physics is one of the few fields where disability is not a handicap.

    Absolute legend. R.I.P.

The way he continued, and the things he achieved despite his disabilities, after being told he had just a few years at 22yrs old is truly the definition of inspirational.

One of the last who had enough prowess and determination to seek out the truth instead of making up lies to serve some political agenda.

Sad news. I know my kids are upset about this. They loved his humour, as well as his appearances on The Simpsons. Truly inspirational man and a testament that you should let nothing get in your way.

Why he was never made a Sir, I don't know. Surely deserved it much more than some of those that have been honoured.

    RIP.

2 years to live with deteriorating quality of life, was his diagnosis at 21 years of age.

Amazing man and probably the greatest free thinker i'll ever know.

He had a great sense of humour, I remember seeing an interview with him conducted by John Oliver the political commentator and comedian. Oliver asked him "You once stated that there could be an infinite number of parallel universes, so theoretically there could be a universe where I’m smarter than you." Hawking replied "Yes, and also a universe where you’re funny."

    RIP Stephen Hawking.

He did indeed, over the lack of government funding for science I believe.

Absolutely gutting. Goodness know's how many people owe their interest in and understanding of astronomy and theoretical physics to him. Am lucking enough to have walked past him many a time in Cambridge while growing up.

    An Amazing feat

to fight against a terrible disease for over 50 years while at the same time pushing forward our knowledge of theoretical Physics. As mentioned above, one person every 50 years or so seems to do this; Einstein, Fenyman and Hawking most recently (not to denigrate all the other amazing minds out there)

He will be missed greatly I think, especially with all the collaborative work he did

    What a life

    Tim

I bumped into Stephen Hawking in Cambridge about 30 years ago, even then I was surprised by how badly disabled he was. For him to cope with his worsening Motor Neurone and yet achieve what he did is quite amazing. His death is a great loss.

In case anyone misses it, here's a link: Stephen Hawking was a beautiful man..."One of the writers for The Simpsons has told Newsbeat Stephen Hawking was such a big fan of the show - he'd show up to rehearsals."

Genius is a much over-used word nowadays, but Stephen Hawking is a genius in every sense of the word.

He will be remembered not only for his own discoveries and theories, but for the massively positive impact that he had on the wider field of science and for inspiring the next generations to follow him and beyond.

A great loss to us all, and a total inspiration.

Dealt with him a few times when he’s be brought in for an eye test and glazed glasses for him (they had the little sensor on them that he used for his typing/speech). Probably got sick of posing for photos. Incredible man to have coped with his illness for that long and still produce groundbreaking scientific work. True genius
