Thread: Nostalgia hit ... looking for advice on 70's LED watches.

Nostalgia hit ... looking for advice on 70's LED watches.

I seem to have been having a nostalgia hit lately and been looking at maybe getting an LED watch from the 70's. Obviously condition wise is paramount but my main concern is how easy it is to replace the digital LED module if something goes wrong ?

Are there any sites, companies, or individuals out there who could either recondition and/or replace the module ?

In his pre-poppy, pre-narcissistic days HC used to write some interesting stuff about electronic watches.

I like my black plastic TI. The scratch isn't that bad, the light was just picking it out. An Ebay purchase from Argentina many years ago.

Looks like a few specialists around.

The Russian Elektronika-1 is also worth a look as a cheap and cheerful option.

What about some of those that have been recently posted where the owners say they never wear them but don't think they'll be able to get rid of them? Edit: I realise now rather than meaning no one will buy them, they may mean they're too attached to them to let go!

I'd certainly not rule out the cheap and cheerful option. An Omega TC would be nice but the only examples I can see on the bay of evil are pretty tired looking ( being diplomatic) and asking 4 figures. Other options I'm looking at are the pulsar's which are a lot more affordable with the bonus of being relatively inexpensive for repairs if anything goes wrong. Of course as you rightly point out, there's the cheaper option's such as Commodore and the old Soviet ones you've alerted me too. Which would limit my outlay if anything was to go wrong.

At least I'm now starting to get a good idea of what to look out for.

This place sells replacement modules for some of the more prestigious brands.

I have a few in my collection, and do wear my Omega Time Computer when the mood takes me.

The all-time classic LED watch from the 1970s. Didn't LED watches fall out of favor due to their excessive battery drain?

From memory it was more that you need two hands to see the time (one to press a button) and that they are impossible to read in direct sunlight.

My father had a sinclair watch. Would love to own one.you could buy them ready to go or in kit form if I remember correctly.they weren't that reliable and battery life was an issue.

Thanks, I think I’ve got it now.

    HH:MM

    The top row represent 0/5
    The remaining rows are 0/1.

    20:52 would be

    . . - .
    -.. -
    -.. -
    . . . .
    . . . .

Or something like that. Is that right?

That's exactly correct. It also shows the date too in digital format - 03:16.

Confuses the hell out of people when I show them!

It is a really cool watch. Someone must have spent ages working out how to push the technology to the limit at the time.
