    Oysterquartz 17000.

I recently acquired this from Gareth.

It has passed through a few members hands over the years and is still in outstanding condition.

It is good to see a watch still on the forum after many years.

    http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...ighlight=17000

It's just had a battery and reseal, so should be around for some time.

Very nice, a German customer has one and it looks great in real life. Enjoy it.

That's the weirdest thing. I've been scouring the net for a nice one for a while now, and only recently was looking at that old listing of mine wondering whether this one would ever pop up again.

    It's a beautiful watch.

Been my beater for over thirty years now. What it might lack in "soul-stirring" characteristics it more than makes up in extreme robustness. Very worthy indeed

A lovely example. Did you buy it new?

Yes and no! I didn't buy it; it was a (very lovely) present. But it was new.

Love a bit of OQ. I have a 17013 and a 17000, and for a while now it's the watches I use the most. Something about this very idiosyncratic Rolex model, more than meets the eye kind of thing...

  9. #9
Agreed; there's a lot to like about the OQ. It's not only among the rarest references from Rolex, but is also unique both visually and mechanically. And I happen to like those visuals a lot. :)

I remember you deciding to look for the short lived mechanical that looked very similar to the OQ (and whose ref I've forgotten) - did you find one? I think I recall someone trying to warn you off? But that's a very murky memory.

Yes indeed, the 1530 (and no, I didn't)... a beautiful watch but a bit too expensive as what few there are around are in demand.

Was the advice against it on the grounds that it wears very small?

Not at all - I imagine it would wear like the OQ, which is the opposite due to the integrated case/bracelet. It was more along the lines of them going for a lot of money.

As an aside, I'm perfectly comfortable with a 36mm case, as my wrists aren't large.

Good to see it’s still around in the forum, was in my possession 5 years ago.

Ive been through a lot of watches over the years and this one would happily sit back in my small collection should the opportunity arise.

Well, I remembered right - the advice being offered was that it wore small (despite having the same case as the OQ) http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?p=4151364

Well found! However, I don't believe that I conceded that one wore smaller than the other, and that certainly wasn't why I didn't buy one. Sadly, those I tracked down were all multiples of the cost of an OQ and most had been badly polished as well. I just gave up in the end.

Congratulations that is a lovely example and I think if you find a good one then keep hold of it.

I've had several over the years and found a beautiful Mk 1 17000 serviced by Rolex that I'm sure I'll always keep.

    Cheers

They start at around £8000. Exclusivity means more money.

I bought this watch from LTF back then, it was a lovely watch but I moved it on pretty quickly within the forum as the ticking drove me nuts.

17014 and the jubilee style bracelet on these is lovely and comfortable and superbly well made.

My old one, purchased from James Dowling:

Sold it for about £1000. Possibly a mistake.

My favourite, the 17000 is a great watch too but gets lost on my hairy fat wrist.
The finish on these is fantastic an object lesson in integrating case and bracelet: the bracelets on both models are exceptional and the MK2 17000 bracelet is imho one of the best Rolex has ever made.

The watch that SWMBO has declared to be her ‘best ever’ (albeit it’s the bi-metal version) and which I’m allowed to handle once a month (to change the date!).

It went for service last summer (after thirty years). The thing is so robust that it didn't look at all bad when it went. However, it came back from Rolex looking new.

This is my 17014 which was sent to RSC last year for a service.

    They did a splendid job.

Hah... not unlike my gilt PCG GMT which is now worth £10k more than I sold it for! I'm sure I spoke to you about buying this one, Paul.

I think you did, but it had already left in one of my biennial watches-are-boring purges.

I'm sure someone is very happy with it right now
