For me 38mm is perfect, but I understand it's a personal matter. Manual wind and grey dial should be a great addition.

38mm is a great size for me too, though the 36ish original wore surprisingly large due to the lugs and thin bezel, so worked for this model. The other big difference was the thickness. Usually GS quartz are relatively thin compared to their other models, but the hand wound original was considerably thinner, giving it a very elegant look. Since GS have recently started making thinner hand wounds again, this model would be a perfect choice. Not that there’s anything wrong with the 9F version of course. But they’ve reworked their other early models in several different ways, and the self-dater is easily one of the best and has only had the one modern version, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see another take on it. Hopefully not a painfully expensive version like their recent gold and platinum re-issues.

I don't know why, but I've always preferred the similar quartz version.

That is quartz - SBGX115 unless I am very much mistaken, also available with a black dial - SBGX117 - on my wrist as I type.

You are of course right... the hi beat declared itself hi beat and had a date window.

    So yes that's the SBGX115.

I'm so hoping Ryan doesn't come back and say the dealer with a NOS one is willing to let it go at a sizeable discount...

Translated into £GBP price is around £3200. Not sure if that's fair or not

I’d say that is very fair as I have had recent offers for mine not too far away from that figure.

But these have gained in popularity in recent times, they were a fair bit cheaper on the 2nd hand market not so very long ago.

They've crept up in price then, not long ago around £2500 if they came up and white especially is hard....So if you do buy and don't bond, keep me in mind - if the time is right, I've been hunting for ages and S.L is not selling....

Nearly double what I paid for my black dial (used on here) a few years ago.

I was briefly wondering about getting a white dial to match but at that price I’ll be giving it a miss, sadly.

(Reminds me of when I failed to buy a yellow dial Zenith Rainbow for about £750 and they are now bonkers money!)

It's an SBGE001, which I think was the first of the Spring Drive watches. It's recently been replaced by the SBGE201, which replaces the Seiko branding at the top of the dial with the newer Grand Seiko branding.

It really is about the perfect watch for me - the lume is wonderful, I'll try to get a picture of it later!

Very nice. I’ve been looking a the 245 version for a while now. How does it wear? I have pretty small wrists so I’m worried it might just be a little too big for me.

I have a 7'' wrist and it's the most comfortable watch in my collection. Lug to lug is about 47mm and because it has a flat caseback and curved lugs, it naturally wraps around your wrist. The OEM strap is good quality but doesn't wear comfortable, super stiff in the beginning, so I recommend swapping.

That is the only GS I would really splash the cash for, but I doubt anyone who owns one would ever part with it for a mutually agreeable sum.

Thanks for the kind words. I noticed they’ve released two more US-only ‘Seasons’ models last week. Apparently each season has several distinct ‘sekki’ in Japan - seasons within seasons.

Is that a black ceramic case nestled into an under chassis of titanium or something?

Yes, mine. Although embarrasingly little worn. It came out for the 40th anniversary of the original Astron.

And yes, it's a ceramic/titanium case with a 9F quartz movement. It comes with a beautiful glossy black leather strap that I imagine would look better, and would definately attract leass dust, but I've never had the guts to put it on for fear of ruining it.

Amazing. I almost bought one for £1600 but it seemed too much at the time, kind of wish I had done now. Looks like yours has aged really well!

I remember seeing a macro of GS hands somewhere, where someone photograpped the underside of a hand via the mirror reflection on the hand below. Was that from someone here? Can't seem to find it anymore.

I worked it out, but wouldn't have from that photo as it's impossible to make out. It's easier to see on this photo of a black dial GMT someone posted on WUS. The whole dial says "GS9F" over and over, except over the 5 o'clock marker (25 mins), where it says "25". The next "GS" is shifted along 2 places. So the sequence changes to 9F25GS, just at that point. It's particularly hard to notice because the "5" is exactly the same as an "S" and the "2" is the same thing flipped. You'd really only know it was a 25 if you were looking for it.

As mentioned, you won’t see it in my poor photo. Have a search for a image on the web and the easiest way to locate it is by locating the S which finishes just above the top of the star when looking at the dial straight on. The rest of the letters/numbers then work there way right from the S

    Cheers

Loving this recent arrival, SBGN009. A bit of a chameleon, never appearing the same shade of blue twice :-)
