Opinions on BMW 5 Series 540i drive Msport

Looking for new family motor but fancy a bit more grunt, dealer bending over and offering £10k off the £60k list with options price and with 0% APR it comes in pretty reasonable on PCP.

Are these decent cars vs Amg E43 for example?

I have no experience of the e43 but I have had my 540i xDrive for 6 months and it is a great everyday practical car, fast enough, sounds good, very comfortable and refined. The xDrive has been good on the slippery county roads and I get around 29 mpg. I love the 3.0 straight six, it's my fifth car with a variant of this engine.

That seems like an ok price- but I’d stump up the rest and opt for the M5. The E43 is nice but the M5 more fun to drive!

Yeah but specced up that's £85k with no discount and will cost a lot more each month so not worth it, plus I'm not keen on the M5 image tbh.

Completely out of my price bracket sadly but my tuppence worth (possibly the true value of my advice but as a car nut I'll lob it in anyway!) and a link to my favourite source of info when buying a new car: -

I would go BMW 540i xDrive at £60k, not many cars are 5* rated and all the motoring press/journo's say a 5 Series is all you'd ever need as a car.

The M5 would be absolutely lovely; and the residuals may well be a lot stronger, but stumping up an extra £30k is a big chunk extra for a second off the 0-60 time, sportier ride and the kudos of an M badge.

    Perfect city car.

I had a slightly better discount offer but with 2.9%apr I wasn’t aware 0% was available on this model!

For reference the build came to 67k with 13k off.

There's a guy on the M forum just bought one £55k but with a mega spec, he is very knowledgable with loads of BMW experience and I can't imagine he would have bought it if he was'nt happy, he has only just got it so as yet not been able to post a full review but so far sounds good.

Doesn't help you buy I've been looking at a 520d M Sport Touring and was expecting that to cost me £350pcm.

If I could go 540i plus X drive for just another £140 a month that's very appealing.

That looks a good deal to me. I had a new 535 (last model) which was great to drive. This one is a lot better. My 640 is up in 6 months and I'm considering this.
