    Anyone grow their own sloes?

I've always been envious of those who have sloes in close vicinity, and to be able to harvest enough to make their own liqueur. I have nothing growing near me so decided today to order 12 plants to grow at the bottom of the garden in an otherwise unproductive patch. I hope I'll have my own sloes within a few seasons.

    Plenty around fortunately. And damsels.

Are the damsels easy to pick (up)?

    curse the predictive text! Damsons.

Oh, and OP: make sure they have loads of sunshine (well, light is probably a more reasonable ask). The best I get are on the south facing hills above Folkestone, near the tunnel operations.

Genuinely misread this thread as “Anyone grow their own shoes?”

It might have explained all the tatty size 8 brogues on SC!

You are located in the 'garden of England' Kent? There must be literally many millions of blackthorn bushes in hedgerows around the county, I can't believe you are more than 10min drive to a bit of productive countryside where they literally grow on trees, you just have to avoid main roads due to pollution and not confuse a bullace with a sloe.

Sloes aren't hard to find but I've never seen damsons, shame as I like the jam and very hard to find in stores/markets.

Some bits of Kent are not so gardenish and just quite Kenty

I'm just in Kent, London ish. There's sloes but the ones I know of are near roads. The best ones I've used were in a rural location near Colchester and were down a footpath between two fields.

I grew up in “proper Kent” where there were damsons (and damsels) in abundance and ready to be foraged. These days I quite like the Kenty bit of London.

Apologies. I had a bit of a heavy night. I read this as "Does anyone grow their own shoes" which was clearly absurd but through a head full of apple brandy I had to check what was going on! As you were...

Strange, up here in the grim North damsons are ten a penny, but sloes take a bit more finding.

There's a field out my back with loads of blackthorn along the edges, less than a mile from the middle of Durham City. I might have a wee nip of sloe vodka later to keep the cold at bay.
