    Bezel issue. Any thoughts?

Hi guys. Been offered a watch at a good price - it's an ETA GMT so the gmt hand is really all that you need for dual time zone - the only issue with the watch (hence the low price) is that the 24 bezel doesn't move. It is of course meant to. Watch isn't old (2011), and from scouring internet a basic "run it under warm water" is suggested, ranging through to "remove the bezel".

    My questions are therefore
    1. What is the likely cause of a suddenly locked bezel (watch hasn't been dropped or had trauma)?
    And
    2. If the water doesn't work is removing bezel for a clean up a DIY job or better to get a watch doctor to do it?

Watch in question is a Steinhart ocean 44. Like I say with a gmt hand it isn't essential to be able to rotate the bezel I guess (it's fixed in the 12 o'clock position anyway), but prefer to sort it

    1. They get gummed up with dirt, it is common on a watch that has led an active life.
    2. I am sure they are easy to pop off and clean out, most bezels are. Use a case knife and tape the watch up prior to attempting. I always find getting the clink spring back in a pain but there is a knack to it.

A bowl of hot soapy water and an old toothbrush may do the trick. That has worked for me before on a stiff bezel, basically too much DNA underneath.

I would suggest an oil bath.

Seriously, there are a number of solutions that come to mind.

Have the seller service it and share the expense.

Arrange to have it serviced yourself.

Don't buy that particular watch. Buy a better example. There must be plenty around, or just buy a new Steinhart if you have to have that brand.

You should be in bed now...?

I think given the rest of the watch is spotless and the price is about 50% of the going rate, I'll be happy to take the risk of trying to fix it. Also since the bezel is nothing to do with the mechanicals of the watch - why would I send it in for a service?

Seriously - try flossing it. Worked wonders on a gummed up bezel I had once.

To fix the bezel, and any other issues that it may be suffering from. It is being sold cheaply for a reason. It is getting towards the time when the watch should be serviced anyway.

Just work floss back and forward under the bezel? Worth a try! I'll post here how I get on and what (if anything) worked

Gently try a blade under the bezel then take a toothbrush to it
