Question what does genuine leather mean?

    Hi all,
On some leather straps I see this 'Genuine Leather' text. Does it really mean anything like it is a good quality or real leather?

    Thanks

usually just means it came off an animal of some sort and isn't PVC :S

not really an indicator of quality sadly.

Daft term that retailers use. It's either leather or it isn't.

Rather like 'real butter', 'real pieces of chocolate' seen on foods.

The trouble is that people are using “PU leather” and so on. Thus “genuine” to distinguish.

Then once you get into exotics, watch out for the word “pattern”, as in “alligator pattern genuine leather”, typically meaning that it’s calf leather, stamped into the pattern of the skin in question (cf. “genuine alligator”).

It’s amazing how many times these days you see leather mentioned in the headline text of advertisements, eBay auctions etc. and when you drill down into the body text you see PU leather or Faux leather, in other words plastic!

I was at the Patek Exhibition at the Saatchi gallery a couple of years ago and was astonished to see "Fake Alligator" (or was it "fake crocodile"?? - I don't remember) stamped on the back of some of the modern straps.

I understand that ethically they may see it as preferable to use calf leather with a stamped alligator pattern to simulate the exotic leather but i thought that their choice of how to market the fact was questionable.

I just didn't like the term "fake" stamped on a Patek.

I agree, you would think ‘simulated’ would be a better choice than fake!

    That Patek thing is funny.

Being honest and telling you it’s fake alligator, raises a “cant believe Patek .......”
But you know us, if Patek said simulated, we’d still having a go for Patek for blurring the truth

I've seen some straps on cheapish watches (eg Rotary) that are marked 'Genuine Leather', and they were utter tat - complete rubbish. They seem to be basically cardboard, with a thin strip of what is allegedly leather on the outside. Not at what I would expect from a proper Leather strap from someone like TheStrapShop or other decent retailers. So, to answer to the OP, I've no idea what 'Genuine Leather' actually means, though it seems to mean very little, and is basically an advertising con....(like calling food 'farmhouse' which has no official meaning at all).

On my Mercedes I have `Artico leather`, which is basically vinyl!

You only realise this when it starts to split and you can see what’s behind it.

Thanks for the link. Interesting that it says 'top-grade leather is actually middle-of-the-road quality' :)

Yep, I had the Chavitimer from Rotary, terrible watch and even worse strap, when the battery finally failed I just binned it

Usually it's made of Genuines, an indigenous people living in the Sahara desert. They tend to dry out quite quickly.

Cheap leather products can be made from the hides what we in the west think of as pets,
"real leather'' can cover up a multitude of sins.

Nothing wrong with Rotary Chavitimers for me...I've got 3! I like their shameless vulgarity. OK - they aren't in the Patek Phillippe class, but they work well enough and cheap.

That's strange, I've owned one for four years and the watch keeps excellent time, and the original croc style leather strap is still in great shape.
Here is a pic I just took

    Here is an unusual one.
Distant (very) relative of the pig.

How long till someone starts to say “organic” leather ??

Or leather than contains traces of DNA...

And I mean within the strap rather than on the outside lol

    Just my off-the-cuff thoughts.

And what does off the cuff even mean ???!!

I've got one like that, but even more blingy, with a Gold case and larger crowns & pushers. I wouldn't dare post a picture here as it'd make most people would choke on their coffees! There again, after I bought it I saw the Breitling that Rotary had 'hommaged' and that wasn't subtle either. Threw the original strap away without even wearing it.

Omega planet ocean rubber straps are made of cardboard sandwiched between two bits of thin rubber.
    Total cack.

That’s why I got one originally. Except m8ne the ‘leather’ strap shed it’s skin, the sub dials never lined up, the seconds hand didn’t line up and kept lousy time.
