How to remove screwed end links

Hi wonder if there's a method for doing this I don't know of. Took a Fortis chrono in a trade (great watch btw Paul ), but I want to try it on a strap. The lugs are drilled but rather than spring bars it has a screwed end bar there's a screw head on both sides so I imagine you need two screw drivers turning in opposite directions at same time. I've had a couple of goes at it but can't find a position that works that allows me to hold one end securely without risk of sliding out causing scratches while giving me ability to get purchase to turn the other side. Hope that makes sense. Is there a top tip technique to do this?

One side has a lug that holds it in place, you only need to unscrew one side...mmm which side was that?

Oh, and I was talking of experience of my one which was on a leather strap, I guess yours could be different. Have you tried a little heat to loosen up any loctite?

I’ve found the best way to apply a little local heat is with the tip on a soldering iron.
    Cheers..

I don't think it will have loctite in place. Think it's been removed before. The issue is when I turn one side the whole bar turns , and I can't figure a safe position or method to hold the other end still to allow me to unscrew it. Just don't want a big scratch ya know

Ah, well that trashes the recessed lug theory... if the whole bar is turning it can't have a holding lug on this watch. 2 screwdrivers it is then by the sound of it.

Ye but one slip and you get a scratched watch. I've managed to get one side off but can't get the other one. Think I'll try a little heat see if it helps. No soldering iron here so maybe a hairdryer

Maybe a 1/2 hard brass s-blade would be sufficient to hold one side.

Phew. Bit of heat helped thanks guys. Glad I persevered cos the strap I put it on is perfect for it in my eyes. Worth the effort

Put a couple of bits of tape (masking, Duck, Sellotape) over both lugs. Poke the screwdrivers through the the tape. Ideally, use a watch case holder (like this from eBay) to facilitate using both hands for the screwdrivers.

I've found that the best way to tackle this is to use a heavy watch box - I use the box that a Tudor watch came in. Put the watch around the cushion (it helps if the cushion is tight-fitting) in the box. In this way you can sort of mount the watch with the first target lug uppermost, then the other.

You still need two screwdrivers, of course, but it does make it easier to get at.

My Fortis B-42 came on the leather strap and has screwbars that only have a screwhead on one side - much like the classic Panerai screwbar arrangement.

I did have a watch that had a similar screwbar arrangement to the OPs. I managed to source a tool which comprised of a weighted base with a short screw blade sticking out of it. Although care was needed to avoid case scratches it worked very well to hold one screwhead while you used another screwdriver to unscrew the bar. I'll see if I can find some pictures.

Hi, did you use hairdryer to apply heat?

Having the same problem with a U Boat watch I want to change strap.

Yes just gave 15 secs with hair drier but it might also just be that I got the two screwdrivers in the right position.
