    New lume on old Speedie

Just got this back from James Hyman. Highly recommended. Has transformed my tired and dirty 1980s Speedie into something rather lovely. Back on the wrist again.

    Not for me, I'm afraid.

It's your watch, though, so if you're happy, what do you care what I think?

I guess the lume works better now, though.

Before I saw the pic I just thought Noooooo I was expecting bright white lume on an aging watch, looks good to me.

Actually that’s a great post I might get hold of him to match the patina on my new hands to an existing dial on my -71

Do you have any pictures of the watch before the work?

    Interesting.

Speedmaster hands don't normally match the dial

    That’s actually true isn’t ,
what happened though is I bought the Speedie with a replacement thin stick second hand and a warped minute hand. Omega replaced the set . So I was thinking of darkening up the patina on the second hand to give it a slightly older look

I think that looks very good, I know the aged lume issue divides opinion but I think its a good compromise between functionality and an age appropriate look.

Like it or not but not every vintage watch is in perfectly preserved condition. I find it a very good result and the best compromise in case you have to deal with damaged or replaced hands.

    Relumes

Relume will always divide opinion, it's been covered forever and a day.....not everyone can afford totally original watches that have beautiful patina, not everyone likes watches that look worn and tired.....as long as the person wearing it likes it then surely it comes down to personal taste......there are enough vintage speedies to go round to cater for all tastes.......hardly like they were limited to a few thousand and never produced again 🤔

    👍🏻

    Well said.

It depends on the watch and owner. I’ve re-lumed old watches that the owner wanted to work as they originally were intended and to be honest it’s superb seeing a 70’s Watch glowing again. I’ve got old watches in my own collection I’ve re-lumed and I’ve also got watches I’d never re-lume where the dial is so tired & it’s original lume fits the look.

That Watch is in great condition and why not have functional lume!

This was before. Just dirty. Tired. Not getting any wrist time. Now? Haven’t taken it off since it came back.

It is personal choice I know and not for all.I wear my watches a lot. This one just looked tired and washed out. Now it has been given a new lease of life. Highly recommended.

Another excellent relume job by James. It looks great, good colour choice & match for a sympathetic restoration

I've always found it interesting how trit ages differently on different brands. Rolex trit seems to age quite nicely whereas Omega often look dirty. I prefer what you've done

I don't generally like faux lume but you're absolutely right, it's brightened up a dull dial by pretending to be even older. Nice work!

Not sure I would have taken a risk getting a relume done on your watch.

But you got a really good outcome, the lume looks really clean like it was originally meant to be on the watch.

The Lume on my 70’s Speedy is not what I would say dirty but it’s strange how Omega lume varies so much, mine is like a green’ish hue, I like the colour of your re-lume but not sure I would attempt that with my step dial.

My -71 Step is greenish as well. Wonder if it were different batches of Tritium was the reason

What’s the date of yours? Mine is April 1974 and a -71 T, really like vintage lume colours but guess green is the colour for our batch!

Looks much better. Rather dark for a 70s model, that is more like the shade you might expect on a 60s one but way nicer than what was there before.

Really like that, would love to have one that looked like that in my collection.

I agree with the comments regarding the lume looking dirty. Here is a photo of my ‘69 for reference and I think the lume matches perfectly with the faded grey bezel
